Rockies vs Reds Analysis

The Cincinnati Reds travel to Coors Field Friday night to play the Colorado Rockies. Hard-throwing Hunter Greene takes the mound against Antonio Senzatela. It’s a matchup of two of the most poorly run teams in Major League Baseball.

There’s not much you can say about the Reds, other than… they’re a really bad baseball team, starting this season 3-16. They did what I never thought a Major League Baseball team could do: Be cheaper and make worse decisions than the Colorado Rockies.

Cincinnati Reds Preview

Reds’ ownership let most of their good players go in the off-season such as Sonny Gray, Jesse Winker and Eugenio Suarez. With the exception of a few players that include Hunter Greene, Cincinnati is fielding a Triple-A team. However, there’s still a lot of baseball to be played, including tonight’s game.

One one of the bright spots for the Reds is that Mr. Greene can throw hard. Really hard. In his second start of the year against the Dodgers, he set an MLB record for 39 pitches of at least 100 mph.

The right-hander started his career in 2017 in the minors, had Tommy John surgery after 2018, and missed the 2019-20 seasons.

It’s his first year in the majors, and it shows in his numbers. Greene has a 5.27 ERA in 13.2 innings of work with a 1.39 WHIP and 16 strikeouts. It’ll be interesting to see how he can pitch at the most hitter-friendly park in baseball.

Another positive for the Reds’ is their hitting has come around. They scored at least five runs in each of their three games with the Padres. Cincinnati hitters should look forward to playing at Coors Field this weekend.

Colorado Rockies Preview

After starting the year 10-5, the Rockies lost four straight on the road to the Phillies. It looks like the Rockies are who we thought they were in 2021: A team that plays much better at home than on the road, with a bad pitching staff. The Rox bullpen has the highest ERA in baseball, and the Reds aren’t much better.

Antonio Senzatela has gotten off to a rough start. In 13.1 innings he has an ERA of 4.73 and a WHIP of 2.03. He’s only walked one batter in three starts, but has allowed 26 hits – that’s an average of two per inning. He’s had success in the past pitching at Coors Field, so he could be due for some positive regression.

Rockies vs Reds Prediction

With two struggling starting pitchers, bad bullpens and a Reds team that’s hitting better, it seems to set up well for a classic Coors Field high-scoring game. The run total is 10, which seems really low. This could be a trap, but I’ll take the over 10 runs total.

Prediction: Over 10 runs total
