Giants vs Nationals Analysis

The Washington Nationals come to Oracle Park to play the San Francisco Giants in the first of a three-game weekend set. Right-hander Aaron Sanchez goes against southpaw Alex Wood. The Nats look to break an 8-game losing streak, while the Giants just want to keep on rolling.

Washington Nationals Preview

The Nationals are in the cellar of the NL East with a 6-15 record. Other than Juan Soto, they don’t have a lot of good talent on their roster – and the numbers reflect it.

They’re in the bottom five in baseball in both ERA and OPS. However, they have some good young talent in their farm system, and one of their best prospects – pitcher Joan Adon – begins the year in the starting rotation.

Aaron Sanchez has one forgettable start to begin the 2022 season, but it was against the team he’ll face tonight, the San Francisco Giants. His career numbers are respectable with a 3.96 ERA and 1.36 WHIP, and averages five strikeouts in every six innings of work.

San Francisco Giants Preview

The Giants are off to a great start, leading the NL West with a record of 13-6, a half game ahead of the Dodgers. Team hitting has been average at a 16th-best OPS of .686, and the pitching has been outstanding. They have a 2nd-best ERA of 2.32 and a WHIP of 1.09, while the bullpen has the lowest ERA in baseball at 1.54.

Starting pitcher Alex Wood has posted really good numbers in his first three starts. He’s 2-0 in 14.1 innings of work with a 2.51 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 16 strikeouts.

After pitching for six seasons with Braves, Reds and Dodgers, he came to San Francisco in 2021. Wood made 26 starts, had a 10-4 record and helped the Giants to win 107 games last year.

I don’t know what pitching coach Curt Young does to improve Giants pitchers that come from other teams. But whatever it is, it’s working pretty darn well. If their starters and bullpen continues to pitch well throughout the season, they have a real shot to get 100 wins and make a World Series run.

Giants vs Nationals Prediction

Sometimes you don’t need a lot of analysis or number-crunching, and this is one of those games. The Giants are a much better baseball team, playing at home with a better starting pitcher. The moneyline is too expensive at over -200, so give me the Giants on the run line.
