Cleveland Guardians vs Minnesota Twins Analysis
We have a showdown between the top two teams in the American League Central as the Cleveland Guardians begin a rare five game series against the Minnesota Twins at Target Center on Monday night.
The Twins prevailed in two of three home games against the Colorado Rockies, while the Guardians were swept off their field by the scorching hot Boston Red Sox.
Cleveland will turn to Triston McKenzie to stop the bleeding, while the veteran Sonny Gray takes the mound for Minnesota. First pitch is slated for 7:10 PM EST/4:10 PST.
Guardians Must Defend Their House
The Cleveland Guardians were on the Minnesota Twins doorstep prior to be swept off of their own field against the Boston Red Sox. They still sit only 2.5 games behind the Twins with an amazing opportunity to gain ground this week at home.
Cleveland lost 8-3 yesterday with Aaron Civale only lasting four innings and allowing three runs prior to the bullpen being exploited as well. Power bat Jose Ramirez went 3 for 4 with a run and two doubles.
The Guardians rank 11th in scoring, 10th with a .250 team batting average and 17th in OPS at .700. The young righty Triston McKenzie will take the mound for Cleveland on Monday evening.
He’s been strong on the year with a 4-5 record, 3.51 ERA and 1.01 WHIP. He was torched in his last outing in Minnesota, where he allowed six earned runs on nine hits and three home runs in only 4.1 innings of work.
Twins Look To Fortify Lead In Central
The Minnesota Twins have held the division lead for most of the season but have been unable to completely pull away from the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox.
They still lead by 2.5 games and will have an excellent opportunity to widen the margin. The Twins dominated the Colorado Rockies in the last two games of the series winning 6-0 and 6-3.
Emerging superstar Byron Buxton feasted on the Rockies, going 3 for 3 with a triple, double, three runs and an RBI. Joe Ryan did what was needed as he tossed five innings of three run baseball. Four bullpen arms combined for four scoreless innings and finished off the Rox.
Minnesota ranks 15th in scoring, while ranking just inside the top ten in batting average and OPS. The 32 year-old Sonny Gray has put together a great season so far with a 3-1 record, 2 53 ERA and 1.03 WHIP.
Like McKenzie, Gray struggled against tonight’s opposition in his last outing, where he allowed four earned runs on eight hits in only four innings.
Cleveland Guardians vs Minnesota Twins Prediction
The Minnesota Twins come in as -135 money line favorites on the road, while the Cleveland Guardians sit at +115 with a total of 8.5. This is a showdown between two very similar teams in statistical ranking and roster construction.
Each team has a potent offensive attack that revolves around a high end slugger in Byron Buxton and Jose Ramirez. Cleveland has a very slight bullpen advantage, but today’s starters sit on the same tier.
The Twins are in better form and I trust the Minnesota bats and Sonny Gray a bit more than McKenzie and company right now. It’s not my most confident play but let’s make a small wager on the Minnesota money line.
