Athletics vs Twins Analysis

The Minnesota Twins visit RingCentral Coliseum to take on the Oakland A’s in the second of a three game series.

The Twins took game one Monday night 3-1, and the A’s look to even it up by sending James Kaprelian to the hill against Dylan Bundy.

Twins Preview

Minnesota is off to a really good start, powered mainly by their pitching. Staff ERA is 5th best at 3.27, team OPS is 13th at .705 and they’re a legitimate playoff contender.

Byron Buxton has started the year with 11 home runs and 20 RBI, and could be an MVP candidate if he continues to produce at the plate. And Carlos Correa has been a solid addition to the Twins at shortstop.

Veteran right-hander Dylan Bundy is off to a rough start with a 5.76 ERA and WHIP of 1.32 in five starts and 25.0 innings. He’s averaged almost a strikeout per inning and only issued five walks, so his control has been good.

Bundy has been either really good or really bad in his starts. After two recent bad starts, he should be due for positive regression in a pitcher-friendly park and facing a light-hitting A’s lineup.

Athletics Preview

The A’s have been known as a scrappy, but usually undermanned team. But management took that to an extreme this year when they traded away all their best players, such as Matt Chapman to the Blue Jays.

The pitching is still solid with an 11th best ERA of 3.57. But the hitting is “turrible,” as Charles Barkley would say, with a league worst .574 OPS.

Starter James Kaprelian had a bad first start on May 1st, giving up four earned runs in 2.0 innings. But he settled down and only gave up three earned runs in his last two starts that covered 10 innings.

Athletics vs Twins Prediction

The Twins have scored three runs or less in six of their last seven games. And the A’s have the worst lineup in MLB.

Both bullpens are rock solid with the 4th and 5th lowest ERA, and the game is in a pitcher-friendly park. That’s why I’ll take under the 7.5 run total.

Prediction: Under 7.5 Total Runs Scored
