Rangers vs Angels Analysis

The Los Angeles Angels visit Globe Life Field to play the Texas Rangers in the second of a three game series. The home team took last night’s game 7-4, and the Angels look to even things up. Tonight it’s a battle of southpaws as Reid Detmer goes against Taylor Hearn.

Angels Preview

Detmer’s last start was a gem as he threw a complete game no-hitter against the Tampa Bay Rays at home on May 10th.

Out of his six starts this year, four at home were solid as he didn’t give up more than two earned runs in each contest. But his two road outings haven’t been as good, giving up eight earned runs in 8.0 innings of work.

The Angels hitting machine is firing on all cylinders with a 3rd best OPS of .739. And the pitching has really turned the corner with a 4th best team ERA of 3.23 and 8th best bullpen ERA.

Rangers Preview

The Texas offense has found a spark, as they’ve scored seven runs in their last two games. However, they’re still 27th in team OPS at .626.

The Rangers’ starting pitchers have regressed the last couple of weeks, with a 23rd best team ERA of 4.07. But the bullpen has improved to 14th best in MLB with an ERA of 3.56.

Starter Taylor Hearn has had a couple of good recent starts. On May 1st he went 5.0 innings versus the Braves, giving up four hits and two earned runs. Then on May 12 against the Royals he threw five shutout innings and gave up just one hit, three walks with six strikeouts.

These two teams aren’t the best hitting lineups and Hearn struggled against better offenses like the Rockies and Phillies. We’ll see how he performs against an elite hitting lineup like the Halos.

Rangers vs Angels Prediction

Normally I’d fade a team whose pitcher threw a no-hitter in his last start. But the Angels have a much better lineup than Texas, and Taylor Heard can give up hard hit baseballs if he doesn’t miss bats.

Both teams combined for 11 runs last night, and I think this should also be a higher-scoring affair. That’s why I’ll take the full game over.

Prediction: Over 8.5 Total Runs Scored
