Astros vs Mariners Analysis

The Seattle Mariners will be looking to even-up the American League Divisional Series against the Houston Astros after letting one slip away on Monday. The Astros trailed early by scores of 4-0 and 6-2 but rallied in the eighth and ninth innings to eventually win 8-7 on a tremendous three-run blast by Yordan Alvarez.

Trade deadline acquisition Luis Castillo gets the nod for the Mariners while Houston counters with the southpaw Framber Valdez.

Alvarez & Astros Stay Hot

The Houston Astros trailed 7-5 entering the bottom of the ninth on Monday but won the game 8-7 behind a walk-off three-run shot by their powerful slugger Yordan Alvarez. Alvarez went 3-for-5 on the day with the home run, double and five RBI.

Astros ace Justin Verlander had a horrible outing with six runs allowed on ten hits across only four innings of work. Four relievers worked together to hold the Mariners to one run in the last five innings.

Houston finished the regular season ranked eighth in runs scored, second in batting average at .270 and second in team ERA at 2.90.

The lefty Framber Valdez will toe the rubber on Thursday afternoon for the Astros. Valdez is 17-6 on the season with a 2.82 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 194 strikeouts across 201.1 innings of work. Valdez has taken a step back during the last month of the season with a 4.18 ERA. He faced Seattle twice this season and allowed six runs across 13.2 innings pitched.

Mariners Must Put Game 1 Behind Them

Lead-off man Julio Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBI while Ty Fance went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Logan Gilbert gave the M’s a serviceable outing while allowing three runs in 5.1 innings.

The Mariners rank 18th in runs scored and eighth in team ERA at 3.59. Luis Castillo was lights-out in his Wild Card start against the Toronto Blue Jays, pitching 7.1 shutout innings with zero walks. The former Reds hurler was acquired via trade in August and has paid major dividends. He went 8-6 on the season with a 2.99 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 167 strikeouts across 150.1 innings of work. Castillo hasn’t faced Houston yet this season but held them to only two runs across six innings in his lone start against them.

Astros vs Mariners Game 2 Prediction

The Mariners are coming off a tough loss but with Castillo on the mound I lean in their direction. However, this Astros lineup is a scary group and Alvarez is already in playoff mode. Regardless, the Mariners bats have been red-hot with 21 runs scored in their three postseason games.

The Seattle team total is set at 2.5 with some juice at -135, a total they have eclipsed in all three playoff games as well as their final nine regular season games. The M’s faced Valdez twice this season and ended those games with eight and four runs. Valdez himself gave up three runs in each of those games before exiting.

This is the postseason where runs are at a premium and the Astros do have an elite bullpen, but by betting on the road team we are guaranteed a full nine innings of at bats and we only need three runs to cash this ticket with a lineup that has been firing on all cylinders. Our recommendation is to play the Seattle Mariners’ ream total over 2.5 runs, which is available at -135 at Draftkings.
