The Pirates return just TWO defensive starters from last season and they’re at the lineman and linebacker position so there will be some tough learning curves during this matchup for the secondary which gave up 231 passing yards per game last season.

The Pirates’ rushing defense was actually top of the American Conference last season at just 120 yards per game so don’t be surprised if Alabama attempts to air it out early in an attempt to shutdown any upset potential early on.

In very limited action last season Russell was 11-15 for 143 yards which was good for 13 yards per pass completion. Going with that yards per completion baseline he’d only need 18 completions to get over this total and the Crimson Tide shouldn’t waste time getting him comfortable in the pocket with a SEC clash at Kentucky next weekend he’ll need to be ready for.

Don’t be surprised if Alabama runs up the score here to get Russell as acclimated as possible with the quarterback going over 240.5 passing yards on Saturday against East Carolina.

College Football Player Props Prediction #2: Nico Iamaleava (UCLA) Over 206.5 Passing Yards (-115)

Junior Nico Iamaleava attempts to bounce back from his 2025 season which saw him only throw for 1,928 yards in 11 games after transferring from Tennessee in which he threw for 2,616 yards in 2024.

We’re going to take him to throw for over 206.5 passing yards in the Bruins’ opener as they face in-state rival Cal for the first time since 2023.

The Golden Bears defense will be completely different from last season as they not only return ONE starter but they’ll have a new head coach and defensive coordinator at the helm as well.

For what it’s worth Cal allowed 205 passing yards per game last season as we should see UCLA take a more aggressive approach through the air under new head coach Bob Chesney who led James Madison to the College Football Playoff last season.

Sure, UCLA has a lot of turnover on offense but it did retain starting offensive linemen Eugene Brooks and Sam Yoon so Iamaleava should have time to make accurate passes in the pocket nonetheless.

With the total set at 53.5 and UCLA listed around 2.5 point favorites the books are looking around a projected 28-25 win for UCLA and we think if the Bruins are pushing 30 points, Iamaleava is going over this number. Take him to go over 206.5 passing yards in a renewed rivalry game Saturday night.
