Wake Forest vs Syracuse Analysis

Two ACC teams looking to stop the bleeding will meet in Winston Salem on Saturday as Wake Forest hosts Syracuse.

Both teams started the year 6-1 but the wheels have come off in North Carolina and upstate New York. Syracuse has lost four in a row while the Demon Deacons have dropped three of their last four.

Syracuse Struggles Without Shrader

Syracuse was ran out of the building at home last week against the Florida State Seminoles, putting up just nine first downs in that game and getting out-gained by a massive 260 yards.

Syracuse owns the historical edge over Wake Forest by a tight 6-5 margin, however, Wake Forest has taken each of the last two meetings against the Orange in 2020 and 2021.

Most of Syracuse’s recent struggles can be pinned on the injuries and loss of QB Garrett Shrader, but the defense has largely remained up to the task. The Orange rank ninth nationally in total passing yards allowed this season. Syracuse’s passing defense is the best it has been in over a decade.

Where’s The Defense Wake Forest?

The Demon Deacons played pretty well and fought hard in their attempt to unseat North Carolina, but getting stops on defense was once again the biggest issue as Wake Forest’s defense gave up 600+ yards to the Tar Heels.

Wake Forest ranks 96th in the country this season in total opponent yards allowed at 413.8 yards per game on average. Alarmingly, they have been even worse at home this year, giving up a mammoth 460.4 yards per game in Winston Salem (117th in the country).

Wake Forest vs Syracuse Prediction

Even with all their recent issues and the fact QB Garrett Shrader still might not be at 100-percent for this one, we’re still taking the Syracuse Orange in this spot on Saturday catching well over a touchdown in Winston-Salem.

Wake Forest’s run game is nowhere near the level of Florida State’s, Pittsburgh’s, or Notre Dame’s, all of Syracuse’s last three opponents. In a battle of air superiority, the Orange have shown how good they are defensively through out the season. Wake Forest QB Sam Hartman has been prone to throwing interceptions during his career, and we expect the Orange defense to force a few turnovers.

We believe this is simply too many points here on Saturday and we’re taking Syracuse plus the points this weekend to get the road win and cover against Wake Forest over in the ACC.

Prediction: Syracuse Orange +10
