UTSA vs North Texas Betting Analysis

UTSA has won nine-straight entering Friday night’s title game as the Road Runners look to go back-to-back in Conference USA. They won last year’s title with a 49-41 victory over Western Kentucky on this same Alamodome turf.

UTSA was tested at various points during the season, including that first matchup with the Mean Green. A deep dive into that box score shows a lot of interesting nuggets. UTSA ran 94 plays compared to only 52 from North Texas. The Road Runners had 32 first downs compared to just 13 from the Mean Green.

With numbers like that, you would have assumed UTSA dominated the game. Not so much. North Texas led at halftime and going into the fourth quarter. Mean Green QB Austin Aune averaged 10.5 yards per pass attempt.

This will be the 11th meeting between the Road Runners and Mean Green, with each team winning five heading into Friday’s championship game.

Mean Green Look To Offense For Success

The Mean Green offense has given opposing defensive coordinators nightmares this season. North Texas leads all Group of Five teams in yards per play this season (11th nationally). The Mean Green led C-USA in passing yards per completion, and they finished the regular season ranked in the top-30 nationally in total offense, rushing offense, scoring offense and passing efficiency.

Alamo-Fortress For UTSA

Not many teams in the country enjoy a greater home-field advantage than UTSA inside the Alamodome. Since head coach Jeff Traylor took charge, the Road Runners have gone 17-2 at home, including winning 15 of their last 16 games. UTSA has won four of the five meetings with North Texas in the Alamodome, and the historic venue will certainly be rockin’ on Friday night.

UTSA vs North Texas Prediction

As strong of a run as UTSA have been on of late, we believe this line is set just a shade too high here and we’re happy to side with North Texas in this one.

The Road Runners showed how vulnerable they are to a high-powered passing attack in their last game against the Mean Green and that’s been a major problem for them all year, ranking 101st in the country this season on total opponent passing yards allowed at 261.1 yards per game.

North Texas ranks top-20 in the country this year in their passing attack on the road, where they’re averaging a red-hot 289.3 yards per game through the air.

We expect this to be another close-fought, one-score type of affair here on Friday and we’re happy to side with North Texas at the current +8.5 line.
