Oregon vs Oregon State Predictions

  • Oregon Ducks -7 vs Oregon State Beavers
  • Total: 60.5 Points
  • Oregon is 1-5 against the spread at home this season.
  • Last year was the Beavers’ first win in this series in the last 13 years.

Oregon closes out its regular season campaign on Saturday hosting rivals Oregon State in a matchup that the Ducks will no doubt be looking for a big rebound in after getting hosed last week by an excellent Utah team in Salt Lake City.

Utah absolutely manhandled Oregon in that game from start to finish, holding the Ducks in, what up to that point of the season had been a pretty dominant running game for Oregon, to just 2.7 yards per rush and just 63 total rushing yards in that game.

Oregon’s air attack didn’t fare much better either as Duck’s QB Anthony Brown threw for just 17-of-35 and had a final game QBR rating of just 47.7 as well. However, the good news for the Ducks this week is that Oregon State’s defense is nowhere near the level of what they faced against Utah last week, and that should allow them to regroup offensively here.

The Utes have the 32nd best passing defense in the nation this season while the Beavers rank just 96th on that same category as they gave up huge yardage to both California and Washington State over recent weeks.

On top of that, as poor as Oregon looked on the ground last week against Utah, the Ducks still possess a highly effective run game. Oregon have averaged 212.5 rushing yards per game this year, good for 3rd in the Pac-12 and 20th nationally, and face a team in Oregon State that ranks 76th this season on opponent yards per rush attempt.

Oregon QB Anthony Brown will also look to have a bounceback this week in Eugene where he’s been strong this season, passing for over 1,200 yards in just six games at home with a pass completion rate of almost 70% as well.

The bubble burst situation here is a concern obviously on the Oregon side as with a win against Utah last week, they likely could have punched their ticket into Playoff contention with a semi-final appearance, so heads could be low here. Even so, the Ducks have been a machine in Eugene this season, averaging 12 points per game more here than on the road, a massive 0.7 yards per play more as well at home, and have held opponents to 6.2 points per game less on average inside Autzen Stadium. And when you factor in Oregon State’s own defensive issues on the road this year, the Beavers giving up almost 500 yards to Washington State a few weeks ago, 517 yards to California as well, the Ducks are capable of doing some serious damage here on Saturday against Oregon State if they can bounceback to anywhere near their best.

Overall, I believe Oregon is the play here as I do expect a bounceback from them in Eugene against an Oregon State team that has simply failed to impress consistently on the road this season.

Oregon vs Oregon State Analysis from The GoldSheet

What they used to call the Civil War has some intriguing storylines even after the Ducks effectively removed themselves from the playoff discussion by getting napalmed at Salt Lake City last week. First, the Pac-12 North, which Oregon will have to win to sew up, as any scenario in Friday’s Apple Cup either puts Wazzu in position to leapfrog the Webfoots, or affords the Beavers the opportunity to do the same. Second, the rumor mill is now buzzing in Eugene with the Florida job now open and Sunshine State native Mario Cristobal being mentioned at or near the top of the Gators’ wish list. As there’s not much more Phil Knight can do to improve facilities for the Ducks, not sure he can do anything other than offering a piece of Nike if Cristobal really wants to return nearer his roots.

Aside from the sidebar stuff, Oregon was exposed last week as a title pretender, with several close calls catching up with the Ducks at once. OSU also does a lot of the same things as Utah, with a jarring ground game reminiscent of the old Dee Andros Power-T with Earthquake Enyart banging away between the tackles, to rank 8th in national rushing behind durable B.J. Baylor, up to 1200 YR, and short-yardage specialist LB-turned-direct-snap QB Jack Colletto, whose 47-yard TD run buried Herm Edwards’ ASU last week.

Meanwhile the OSU defense has responded to Jonathan Smith’s recent change of coordinators with the new-look, aggressive Beavers allowing just 24 points across wins vs. Stanford and ASU for new defensive coordinator Trent Bray, and hardly to blame for the Sun Devils’ lone TD set up by a blocked punt and field position at the Beavers’ 3-yard line.
