Army vs Georgia State Analysis

After an 0-4 start to its season, Georgia State needs a huge turnaround here on Saturday as the Panthers travel to West Point to take on an Army team who has also struggled to put games in the win column.

Georgia State suffered yet another disappointing loss against Coastal Carolina last week in a game where cheap turnovers cost them once again, with QB Darren Grainger throwing two interceptions over the course of the game with four turnovers in total.

Army secured its first win of the season two weeks ago against Villanova in a solid offensive display after two disappointing performances over their opening two starts of the year against Coastal Carolina and UTSA respectively.

Both teams hold one win apiece in head-to-head meetings over recent years with Army winning the last one 43-10 in Atlanta last year.

Panthers Should Make it Interesting On The Ground

Georgia State is a program that has prided themselves on running defense over the last few seasons, holding opponents to an average of 137.2 rushing yards per game over the last two-and-a-half seasons.

That’s a feat that has been continued this year as the Panthers held South Carolina to just 79 yards rushing in their only road game so far this season, good for 14th-best in the country.

Army Continues Dominant Run Attack

The Black Knights ran straight over the top of Villanova two weeks ago putting up almost 500 yards of offense on the ground in that one, and already rank third in the country right now on total rushing yards per game this season.

That’s no surprise either as under head coach Jeff Monken, Army averaged a colossal 382.6 rushing yards per game last year at home against FBS opposition, the most out of any team in college football.

Army vs Georgia State Prediction

Much like their academy counterpart Air Force, Army has made a concentrated to throw the ball more this season. In the Black Knights’ first two games against FBS opposition, Army actually gained more yards through the air than on the ground (446-383). The Black Knights reverted to form against Villanova two weeks ago and put absolutely everything into the running attack, which Villanova was simply unable to deal with.

That will likely be the gameplan yet again here on Saturday as Army has been extremely successful in their running attack in Michie Stadium over recent years and will look to replicate that success once again this weekend.

The one difference maker, however, is that Georgia State has a much better run defense than Villanova has and should provide a much sterner test to Army on the ground as a result.

We expect Army to have their hands full in this one and for Georgia State to provide a tough test for them on the ground. Look for this game to go under 54 points on Saturday over in West Point between Georgia St. and Army.
