2026 Arkansas Football Preview and Win Total Prediction
The hiring of former Memphis head coach Ryan Silverfield hasn’t yet generated any full-throated “Wooo Pig Sooey!” yells from the Arkansas football fan base. The Fayetteville faithful remain skeptical after Silverfield failed to win the American despite a resource edge over the rest of the conference. GoldSheet’s college football specialist Bruce Marshall shares his thoughts on the 2026 Arkansas football season.

The over was 8-4 in Arkansas’ games, and seven of those contests had a closing total north of 60 points. Arkansas Football Outlook
Several years ago, when asked how it felt to be hired as UCLA’s head coach despite being the Bruins’ third or fourth choice, Bob Toledo was ready with a quick response. “Well,” said Toledo, “I don’t think I was my wife’s first choice either, but so far that’s worked out pretty well.”
The analogy to Arkansas and its November 30 hire of former Memphis head coach Ryan Silverfield might not be far off of the mark, though regional observers aren’t quite sure how far down the wish list the Razorbacks actually went (Four? Five? Six? More?) before landing on Silverfield. We do know the wheels had been turning in Fayetteville even before last season, when Sam Pittman entered the fall on the hot seat; a gut-punch 32-31 loss at Silverfield’s Memphis on September 20 put Pittman on the ropes, and Notre Dame’s 56-13 romp at Fayetteville the following week sealed Pittman’s fate.
Offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, a curious choice with whom to share any foxhole, was named interim as he got a second chance with the Razorbacks after his controversial exit more than a decade earlier, but couldn’t notch a W. So, after spending the fall kicking the tires on almost everyone from Lincoln Riley to Rhett Lashlee to any other coach in Jimmy Sexton’s stable of clients, the ‘Hogs finally landed on Silverfield after it seemed as if South Florida’s Alex Golseh (another from the Sexton camp) would take the job before doing a u-turn to Auburn.
Silverfield did inherit a Cotton Bowl side from Mike Norvell (who took the Florida State job), but had the misfortune of a debut campaign in the disjointed 2020 Covid season, lessening any chance of a smooth transition.
Silverfield did produce steady winners and potent offenses, however, which added to his appeal, but faces a massive rebuild with the Razorbacks. Top 2025 weapons QB Taylen Green (Browns 6th round) & RB Mike Washington, Jr (Raiders 4th round) are now in NFL camps, with Green’s caddy KJ Jackson, who flashed some upside late last season with a Green-like style, the likely successor at QB.
Bruising 235-lb RB Braylen Russell (5.3 ypc in career), if he can stay healthy, should add a chop-busting dimension, while Silverfield and OC Tim Cramsey (along from Memphis) are encouraged about an OL that impressed in spring. Though whether that will be enough to flourish in the rugged SEC remains to be seen.
Silverfield’s biggest challenge will be on defense, where the Razorbacks ranked as one of the nation’s worst last season (33.8 ppg ranked 127th) and where it is hoped a slew of transfers can make an immediate impact. The hurdles don’t end there, however; Arkansas special teams were also the worst in the SEC a year ago, the ‘Hogs were the second-most penalized team in the loop, and the -11 turnover margin ranked well up the track (123rd) at Oaklawn Park.
2026 Arkansas Football Win Total Prediction
Last year was a disaster in Fayetteville, though it’s worth noting that Petrino (and, indeed, Pittman in the Ole Miss and Memphis games) did have the Porkers competitive in most of their losses, as Arkansas lost six times by one score. That, however, was with an offense that featured NFL-caliber talent at skill positions, which we’re hardly sure replicates this fall.
Silverfield’s immediate task probably has just as much to do with off-field developments, such as getting the state’s booster class on board (and not all in John Calipari’s pocket) while adjusting the culture and program dynamics, including facilities. It’s a heavy lift.
Arkansas might project as underdogs in all nine SEC games, plus a September 12 trip to Utah, so clearing 4.5 wins looks a big ask. Maybe next year? UNDER 4.5 WINS (-115/120)
