The No. 12 ranked Oregon Ducks (2-0) have been practicing long enough, and it has been far too long since Dana Altman and his squad were put to the test. The Ducks are ready to be tried, fit to be tied, and unless you are a vegetarian, fried Duck is on the menu tonight if you ask any of the BYU Cougars (2-0) clan that traveled to the Great Northwest for a Tuesday night showdown in the Moda Center.

Victories over San Diego State and the Cleveland State Vikings have prepared the Cougars for a tilt against the Ducks in the Phil Knight Invitational at Portland. Oregon has walk-in-the-park victories against Texas Southern and Southern Methodist. Dana Altman’s team is about to receive the challenge which he believes his team is ready for.

BYU Cougars

“Coach is doing a good job staying on us, making sure we’re prepared for any game, making sure we don’t take our opponents lightly,” transfer Rivaldo Soares told the media on Sunday. “Texas Southern and SMU are two good teams, ” Soares said the Oregon media according to Yahoo Sports.

BYU arrives for the battle-tested contest. The closely contested victory over SDSU in the Moda Center that required the ‘Cats to scratch and claw for every inch of home hardwood in the team’s 66-60 win against the Aztecs took some of the early-season energy out of the Cougars.

Call a spade a spade. The Cougars return a pair of uber-talented hoopsters from last year’s squad. In addition, the Brigham Young team will have the services of former-Arizona Wildcat and super senior Alex Barcello. The fifth-year senior was a First Team All-WCC last season, and it will take a meltdown or injury to keep the savvy sharpshooter from repeating the All-League honor.

BYU also returns Caleb Lohner, who has moved up the ranks of the college elite, both in the title and in expectations. The now-sophomore do-any-and-everything Cougars will be the primary off-guard focus for Altman’s squad.

BYU head coach Mark Pope feels and has spoken about what the win over the Aztecs did, rather than mean, for the team. However, the experience and the combat that transpired in the victory over San Diego State benefited his young and inspired his expertise.

The Cougars have been and still are one of the more effecient teams in the college ranks. BYU ranks in the top half of Division I in offensive efficiency. KenPom ranks the Cougars as the 39th most efficient college team in Division One with an Oregon ranking of 22nd.

Oregon Ducks

Ducks head coach Dan Altman isn’t Nick Saban. The Oregon bench boss doesn’t simply reload even though it feels like it. Oregon lost Chris Duarte to the NBA and double-digit scorers Eugene Omoruyi and LJ Figueroa this offseason.

Altman utilized the transfer portal and captured a trio of transfers that might not replace everything Duarte, Omoruyi and Figueroa brough the floor but ask Altman and he will tell you what they do.

De’Vion Harmon averaged 18 points per game and left the Oklahoma Sooners after Lon Kruger’s retirement. However, the Ducks have a familiar face hanging around the practice court in Jacob Young. Those will remember that Young is the brother of Joe Young, who won Pac-12 Player of the Year in 2015. There is also Quincy Guerrier, who recorded eight double-doubles for the Syracuse Orange last season.

Lest I forget about the Duck with the most, Will Richardson returns off a sophomore season. He averaged 11 points per game and shot 47 percent distance. Richardson was sidelined for the first 12 games last season. However, once he came back and took control of his destiny, he was lights-out, spot-on, and a pleasure to watch play.

This year, Richardson has found his mojo early, making 8-of-13 attempts from beyond the arc averaging 19 points per game.

This game returns serious pull when the NCAA Tournament committee meets in March. All things equal, what it returns to Oregon only translates if the Cougars earn a “Dub.”

Most of what you may have read or heard from the major and minor college basketball portals about this game is how loaded the Ducks are. However, this game isn’t in Eugene, and while it will have an Oregon flavor, the Cougars are the most probable winner for one-hundred-and-one reasons.

Oregon vs BYU Analysis from The GoldSheet

The Cougars come off an impressive 66-60 win over San Diego State at the Marriott Center after opening the season with a 10-point victory against a Cleveland State team that reached the NCAA Tournament last season. BYU will now leave Provo to play Oregon at the Moda Center, home of the Portland Trail Blazers, for a game that should look great on the winner’s resume a few months from now. Shooter Alex Barcello is the only Cougar averaging double-figures in scoring (20.5 ppg) but is getting plenty of help from transfers Te’Jon Lucas (Milwaukee) and Seneca Knight (San Jose State). Freshman Fousseyni Traore has filled in nicely with 7-footer Richard Harward sitting out due to a cardiovascular issue, but he’ll face his biggest challenge in dealing with Ducks bigs Quincy Guerrier, a Syracuse transfer, and Franck Kepnang a second-year freshman who should be a force for the foreseeable future.

Oregon has crushed Texas Southern and SMU in Eugene, so getting out to a different venue should provide much-needed experience for both of these new-look squads. Dana Altman will undoubtedly throw different bodies and looks at Barcello to take him out of his rhythm in a gym he’s not used to, which should ultimately make the difference.
