Creighton vs Xavier Analysis
Both teams are looking to avenge losses from earlier this week, and Xavier is looking for a spark. After starting 11-1, the Musketeers are 3-4 in their last seven games and find themselves slipping down the Big East standings.
Bluejays on the Ball
If the Bluejays are going to have any chance to climb up the Big East ladder, they have to cut down on the turnovers where they rank 329th in the country. Creighton entered the season with an inexperienced roster, and they’ve had a pretty steep learning curve under head coach Greg McDermott.
The Bluejays’ offense has found success on the inside where they are No. 27 in the country in two-point field goal shooting. The same can’t be said from beyond-the-arc where Creighton shoots 30.6-percent – about three percentage points below the national average. Senior Ryan Hawkins and Duke transfer Alex O’Connell are the only Bluejays shooting above 30-percent from three-point range this season.
Balanced Musketeers
Coincidentally enough the Musketeers rank 35th nationally in both offensive and defensive adjusted efficiency. Xavier’s defense makes opposing offenses work for shots. Xavier’s opponents have averaged 18.3 seconds per offensive possession, which is No. 329 in pace.
Xavier is one of the tallest teams in the country and they do a very good job at protecting the rim. The Musketeers are top-40 in the country in block percentage and two-point defense, led by 7-foot junior Jack Nunge, who is also the team’s leading scorer.
