Marquette vs Villanova Preview
The Wildcats of Villanova head to Marquette to take on the Golden Eagles who are coming off a tough loss at Providence after riding a seven-game win streak. Villanova has been playing great lately themselves as they’re 9-1 in their last ten games.
The Wildcats are favored by 4.5 heading into this one but have only been 12-9 against the spread so far this season where the Golden Eagles are 14-8. It looks like we’ll be in for a game that comes down to the wire in Marquette tonight.
Villanova in No Hurry
If there is one thing we can guarantee from this game tonight it’s that Villanova will eat up the clock on the offensive end as they rank near the bottom of the country as far as up-tempo play goes. That hasn’t been a problem for Nova though as they don’t turn the ball over ranking 11th nationally in turnover percentage and leading the nation in free throw shooting percentage at 82.4-percent.
Villanova is first in the Big East in both adjusted offensive and defensive efficiency. Colin Gillepsie, Justin Moore and Jermaine Samuels lead the charge for the Wildcats making up over 42 of the team’s 72 points per game.
Golden Eagles’ Golden Touch
Since Big East play has started the Golden Eagles have been flying high. They rank first in three-point percentage and second in both two-point shooting and free throw percentage among Big East teams. This is going to be key for Marquette as they have been terrible rebounding this year, especially on the offensive end.
Head coach Shaka Smart is leading one of the most inexperience teams in the country, but he is getting some great contributions out of the freshman duo of Justin Lewis and Tyler Kolek.

Villanova is looking to avenge their first conference loss on campus since 2017. The Golden Eagles won the first matchup on Jan. 19 as a 13.5-point underdog, holding the Wildcats to 25-percent 3-point shooting. Colin Gillespie missed five of six from beyond the arc and Caleb Daniels struggled to provide scoring off the bench, so they’ll be looking to turn things around in what should be another low-possession game like the first one, which barely topped 63 possessions over 40 minutes. Villanova will have to find the range in an opposing building and is just 5-3 in true road games.
Marquette shot 13-for-29 on 3-pointers in its upset in Philadelphia and has won its last four games at Fiserv Forum, counting ranked Providence, Seton Hall and Xavier among its victims. Kur Kuath is an excellent rim protector who can create issues for Villanova around the basket and needs to avoid foul trouble to ensure Marquette isn’t overwhelmed on the glass. Shaka Smart’s defense has held their last four opponents to 65 or fewer points, while ‘Nova has surrendered fewer than 65 in seven of eight.
