They’ve issued a Red Storm alert in the Big East, and for good reason. It might not be too late for Mike Anderson’s team to sneak onto the Big Dance bubble by Selection Sunday, especially after a couple of thumping wins in a row over Xavier and Butler. There are chances for resume-enhancing wins before the Big East Tourney, beginning with this one tonight.
The pistons have all been firing in recent games for the Red Storm, and no one in the Big East is any hotter at the moment than Anderson’s 6-8 wing Julian Champagnie, who has destroyed Xavier and Butler across the last pair of wins to the tune of 29 points per game.
He’s getting some help, as Purdue transfer F Aaron Wheeler finally began to feel comfy in his new surroundings recently and not long ago put up 31 in a close loss to ranked Villanova, while G Posh Alexander scored 29 in a recent dogfight vs. Providence.
A Missing Piece
The Blue Jays won the first meeting by 23 in Omaha back on Jan. 19 when G Alex O’Connell scored a career-high 28 points in what was arguably the worst effort of the season for St. John’s. Creighton’s Arthur Kaluma scored 20 points in the first meeting between these teams, but he’s out tonight and O’Connell has also been in-and-out of the Blue Jays’ lineup.
