Liam Smith vs Chris Eubank Jr. Betting Analysis

Another British domestic rivalry will be settled this weekend over in Manchester, England as former super-middleweight title contender Chris Eubank Jr. looks to redeem himself by avenging the only stoppage loss of his career so far against Liam Smith on Saturday night over at the AO Arena.

The first fight certainly delivered plenty of drama as Chris Eubank Jr., who went in as the significant betting favorite for that fight, looked comfortable early, seemingly proving too elusive for Smith and rattling him on several occasions with a stiff uppercut that connected through Smith’s guard as well.

However, that bright start for Eubank Jr. quickly unraveled in the 4th round as Smith unleashed a barrage of shots in the corner that culminated in a devastating huge left uppercut that put Eubank Jr. down hard, a shot he managed to beat the count on, but simply never recovered from with Smith getting the stoppage not long after.

Smith’s Pressure Arguably Under-Appreciated

What many considered to be a surprise ending to the first fight, perhaps in hindsight shouldn’t have been that surprising after all as Liam Smith has shown himself to be a top-tier fighter on the world stage for years now.

One of the middle Smith brothers along with Stephen, Liam is sandwiched between older brother Paul Smith, who challenged Andre Ward at light-heavyweight back in 2015, and younger brother Callum Smith, who was the former unified super-middleweight champion of the world.

With this, Liam Smith perhaps never got the full recognition he deserved at the elite level, something he intends to change with another statement victory on Saturday night against Chris Eubank Jr.

With his first loss coming against pound-for-pound great Canelo Alvarez, followed by incredibly close losses against both Jaime Munguia and Magomed Kurbanov, Liam Smith is a fighter who has proved himself at the highest level of the sport, especially since linking up with trainer Joe McNally in his native city of Liverpool.

Is Eubank Jr. 100% Focused For This Fight?

It’s been a topsy-turvy last twelve months for Chris Eubank Jr. overall as the British fighter, who was originally intended to face the son of his father’s former nemesis, Nigel Benn, in October of last year, saw that fight fall through at the last minute due to Benn having been flagged for an illegal substance.

That fight, which would have been a huge box-office smash domestically if it had happened (Chris Eubank Sr. and Nigel Benn had two epic wars back in the early 1990s with their sons intent on delivering the same), was instead shelved for the Liam Smith fight, a fight which ended up derailing Chris Eubank Jr.’s career by handing him the first stoppage loss of his career so far.

The issue for Eubank Jr. ahead of this fight is that the Conor Benn bout was the frontrunner yet again for him, set for the Middle East over the summer with both fighters signed up before Benn’s ban from the British Boxing Board of Control was upheld, with the fight falling through yet again.

Therefore, despite Eubank Jr. publicly saying that this was the fight he most wanted in order to avenge that sole career stoppage loss, and also accusing Smith of a follow-through elbow in their first fight as well, it’s difficult to know how serious Eubank Jr. is ahead of this one as if he sincerely places all of the issues he ran into in that first fight down to a wayward elbow, he could be in for a rude awakening once again on Saturday night.

Liam Smith vs Chris Eubank Jr. Expert Prediction

It’s apparent that with the fallthrough of the Conor Benn fight first time around, Chris Eubank Jr., who was coming off a dominant win over Liam Williams (a fighter who had given Liam Smith a ton of issues across two fights previously), simply expected to go into that first fight and overwhelm the smaller man with his power and range.

However, Smith proved far more elusive than Eubank Jr. originally anticipated, and not only that, Smith was able to land some big overhand rights across the top on Eubank as well, starting from the very first round.

That cleaving overhand right for Smith, plus Eubank’s ability to connect his uppercut through Smith’s guard also, leads us to believe this fight fails to make it the distance once again on Saturday night as both fighters have legitimate ways to end this fight early.

Eubank Jr. looks like a faded force at 160 after coming back down from 168, and his once-vaunted athleticism seems to be slowly deserting him also.

While he still has the power advantage over Smith in this fight, Smith’s relentless pressure will no doubt wear Eubank Jr. down at some point if he fails to land something big early on Smith, but whichever way it goes on Saturday night, we’d be surprised if this one makes it the distance this weekend.

Prediction: Will The Fight Go The Distance? – No (-120)
