Junto Nakatani vs Argi Cortes Betting Analysis

On Monday, September 18th in Tokyo, Japan, three top-quality fights headline a main event that sees unified junior flyweight champion Kenshiro Teraji take on South Africa’s Hekkie Budler in what should be an all-action night of boxing over in the Japanese capital.

While Teraji vs. Budler and Anthony Olascuaga against Giemel Magramo both present interesting style matchups on that card, for this article, we’re instead going to focus on the second of those three featured fights, Junto Nakatani’s defense of his WBO junior bantamweight crown against Mexico’s teak tough challenger Argi Cortes which is featured as the co-main event.

Nakatani goes into this fight as the prohibitive -1700 favorite, with Cortes coming back as a +800 underdog.

Nakatani Looking On Course To Potentially Take Over Multiple Divisions

With a 5 ft 7 in frame and a reach of 67 in, it’s fair to say the 25-0 two-weight world champion Junto Nakatani is putting the surrounding divisions on notice, especially after his brutal display against Australia’s Andrew Moloney last time out, handing Moloney the first stoppage defeat of his career so far.

With dynamite power in both hands and the ability to adapt to his opponent’s weaknesses during a fight, Nakatani was able to target Moloney’s front-heavy guard in that fight with a series of vicious uppercuts which sent Moloney to the canvas early, and eventually going on to get one of the KOs of the year to close the show.

Nakatani is considered by many to be the heir apparent in the division as a result, especially with the much smaller Kazuto Ioka, Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez, and Juan Francisco Estrada, all now in their mid-30s and on the decline while Nakatani is arguably only now just approaching his zenith in the sport.

Argi Cortes Proving A Tough Out For Opponents

After a six-fight winning streak which culminated in his controversial rematch victory over Nicaraguan legend Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez in their second fight, most people saw ‘El Gallo’s’ return to his native Mexico to take on the unheralded Argi Cortes as a bit of a gimme fight before the inevitable trilogy rubber match between himself and his long-time rival Chocolatito was set to be finalized for later in the year.

However, that ‘easy layup’ for Juan Francisco Estrada proved to be anything but as Cortes gave the vastly more experienced Estrada all kinds of work in that fight, with a brutal left hook to the body delivered by El Gallo.

That was enough to put Cortes on his knee midway through the 7th round, really being the only difference maker in a fight that was fairly nip and tuck throughout, with Estrada doing enough to squeeze out a narrow points decision victory over the younger man.

Junto Nakatani vs. Argi Cortes Expert Prediction

Argi Cortes is one of the toughest fighters in the junior bantamweight division, never being stopped over his 28-fight career so far, and as previously mentioned, one who gave the legendary hall-of-famer Juan Francisco Estrada all he could handle in their fight last year also.

However, as good as Juan Francisco Estrada undeniably is, he’s simply not the same force he once was just a couple of years ago, while Junto Nakatani is arguably only now approaching his prime, and looked absolutely devastating in his display against a very solid Andrew Moloney earlier in the year as well.

Moloney, like Cortes, had never been stopped previously before facing Nakatani, but ate some huge uppercuts to put him down early in that fight before being on the receiving end of another pin perfect straight left hand in the 11th round which sent him crashing to the canvas yet again.

Moloney showed his toughness by beating the count off that shot but he was finished just minutes later when Nakatani brutally closed the show by walking Moloney onto an absolutely massive left hook which already has gone down as one of the KOs of the year so far for 2023.

Cortes was taking far too many flush shots off an aging Juan Francisco Estrada in their fight last year, punches that if he takes in this one off a much fresher, stronger Junto Nakatani, will end up taking their toll and likely stopping him here, especially a fight taking place on Nakatani’s home soil as well.

Take Junto Nakatani to win this one by KO/TKO at odds of -150 as we expect the Japanese fighter to add yet another stoppage victory to his record on Monday.

Play: Junto Nakatani by KO/TKO (-150)
