THE PLAY: 1H Athletics +150 J Springs (LHP), G Kirby (RHP) Must Start
George Kirby faces off against a feisty Athletics lineup that has been putting up runs recently and have success against Kirby. George holds a 4.22 ERA on the season and is coming off a rough outing against the Mets while giving up 7 earned runs across 12 hits within 4.2 innings pitched. The Athletics have been able to hit .385 against Kirby over 39 plate appearances with 2 home runs and 4 doubles. I like the experience against Kirby and that the Athletics don’t seem to let moments get too big for them and are playing the game like kids and having fun while doing so.
Jeffrey Springs holds a similar ERA to Kirby with a 4.24 ERA on the season and has success against the Mariners with a large sample size. Over 78 plate appearances, Springs has held the Mariners to a .178 batting average with a 32% strikeout rate and Seattle is hitting just .232 over the last 15 days coming into today’s matchup. The Mariners have a better bullpen than the Athletics and they could be short up to 3 bullpen arms today while seeing extended action over the last 2 days, so I am going to land on the 1st 5 innings here with a small wager on the underdog here.

#4 Book'em Danno (8/5) - The race runs through the favorite here. He shows tactical speed from the gate but does not need to be involved in the pace to win. 2 for 2 on the Saratoga dirt track during the Summer. Best last out speed figure among the group of starters.
#8 Scotland (12-1) - Will drop back and make 1 run late in the stretch, will benefit from a quick pace up front. Big ask of this gelding with a significant jump in class from 100k OC to a Grade 1 at Saratoga, but Mott sees fit to run here. If the favorite gets tangled up with the pace, he could just trip out and blow up the tote board.
#7 Mullikin (7/2) - Speed figures make him competitive here but could cause fits for the favorite with his running style. He has more speed from the gate, could sit outside while boxing the favorite in and make first run. Gets one of the best jockeys in the country in Flavien Prat.

Working at a country club a mile east of Del Mar Racetrack, Sean was introduced to horse racing and his passion for the sport took off. The puzzle of going through past performances and replays appealed to Sean and spent his time after work listening to respected handicappers to learn as much as he could. In his first season playing the NHC Tour, he qualified for the Championship by placing 2nd in the LRF Cares contest after turning his initial $250 bankroll into $3,640.40. In this year's Xpressbet Kentucky Derby contest, Sean finished 6th by flipping the $2,000 bankroll into $15,681.85 while also taking home a 2024 Pegasus World Cup Betting Challenge entry valued at $6,000.
