THE PLAY: Ludvig Aberg over Sam Burns Round 1 (-125)
Coming off a missed cut at Oakmont for the US Open last week, Aberg played better than what the scorecard shows and is also coming off T16 & T13 finishes within the 2 weeks prior. Oakmont had a lot of poor breaks and lies all week that led some of the best players in the world to not score well which ended with only the tournament winner under par for the week. TPC River Highlands is going to play nowhere close to the difficulty that these players saw last week and should give them a sense of relief, especially off the tee where the rough will not play near the penalizing factor that it did during the US Open.
Aberg has had an up and down type of 2025 season when withdrawing from the Pebble Beach tournament and coming back 2 week later to win the Genesis played at Torrey Pines this year. His game is coming into form with 3 straight starts while gaining strokes off the tee and on approach and now coming to a golf course setup that will not test him like Oakmont and Quail Hollow did. I think he is coming into the form that we saw earlier this year as well as during the 2024 season and want to bet him before his odds get too low.
If we are going to dismiss the bad breaks that players got last week within their lies in the rough, we also must dismiss players that had good breaks like Sam Burns did at Oakmont. On paper, it looks like Sam is playing well but I have not been as impressed with his game and feel that his results are outperforming his playing. I think Aberg is a better player and was on the unfortunate side of how fast the fairways were playing and running out into the rough, giving himself terrible lies.
