THE PLAY: Indianapolis Colts +3.5 (-115)
I really like the Indianapolis Colts to cover against Baltimore on Sunday, and I think this is a great Week 1 spot to take the points. I actually think they have a real chance of winning this game outright.
First, home field matters here. Baltimore is coming into Indianapolis to open the season, and we're getting points with a Colts team that I believe is considerably better than the market is giving them credit for.
The Colts showed flashes last season, starting 8-2 before completely falling apart down the stretch and finishing 8-9. This is a team with something to prove, and the addition of Sauce Gardner gives Indianapolis a legitimate difference-maker in the secondary.
I also love the matchup from a physical standpoint. Baltimore is going to want to lean heavily on Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry, but Indianapolis has the defensive tackles to make things difficult inside with DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart. And Baltimore enters the season with some questions on the offensive line — their Week 1 starting center, Jovaughn Gwyn, is making his first career start, with veteran Ethan Pocic still working his way back from an Achilles injury.
On the other side of the football, Alec Pierce is expected back for Indianapolis after ankle surgery. That's a big deal because Pierce is one of the NFL's premier deep threats and averaged 21.3 yards per reception last season. Getting that explosive element back gives the Colts another way to attack Baltimore's defense.
And don't forget — this is Jesse Minter's first game as Baltimore's head coach. There are going to be adjustments, new systems and new responsibilities on the Ravens' side of the ball. Baltimore is talented, but Week 1 on the road against a hungry Colts team is not an automatic win.
I don't need Indianapolis to win this game. I need them to stay within the number.
