THE PLAY: Notre Dame -12.0 (-109)

College GameDay is live from Pittsburgh this week.

Notre Dame is squarely in the national playoff hunt; if they win out, they’ll likely make the field even with two losses, as those defeats came by a combined four points against Top 25 teams Miami and Texas A&M. Notre Dame is in the midst of a seven-game win streak, and only one opponent has managed more than 24 points during that stretch. In fact, five of those seven teams failed to reach 14 points. Excluding their matchup with Navy—which is an outlier due to Navy’s unique run-heavy offense—Notre Dame’s defense has held opponents to just 2.82 yards per play and only 89 total yards per game across their other eight contests. This defensive dominance will likely force Pitt into a one-dimensional approach. If Pitt can’t establish the run, Notre Dame’s pass rush could create turnovers, just as Stanford did by forcing four takeaways against Pitt in their last outing. Notre Dame’s physicality is another advantage, especially against a Pitt team from the ACC which is more and more like the Big 12: heavy on offense, light on defense. Notre Dame’s power running game should open up the passing attack, leading to big plays downfield. Though style points shouldn’t be necessary if they finish strong, Notre Dame may still look to run up the score to bolster their playoff résumé, given their independent status and lack of an automatic conference bid. One notable pregame storyline: When Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi was asked about the significance of the game, he downplayed it, saying, “This isn’t an ACC game. I’d gladly lose 103-10 as long as we win our next two ACC games.” It’s a surprising statement that almost gives Pitt an built in excuse before the game is even played.

Normally, I’d be looking to back the better defense when getting points, which would put me squarely on Iowa—they’re excellent on that side of the ball, but, as usual, their offense continues to struggle. Last week, Iowa rewarded its backers with a cover, losing to Oregon 18-16 but cashing tickets as 4.5-point underdogs. That’s typically how Iowa gets it done: ugly, low-scoring games decided by defense. But there’s a catch here—when you take a top-10 team to the wire, have the lead late, and then lose at the end, it’s emotionally draining. Iowa is a poster child for lose the same game twice, struggling to regroup after a tough defeat like that. Now, they have to fly out to the West Coast to face USC. The Trojans have too much offensive firepower for Iowa to keep up with, especially after a deflating loss. USC also gets the added edge of playing at home last Friday, not only staying home this week but getting an extra day of rest on top of it.

Marco D'Angelo has been a professional sports handicapper and bettor since 1980. Marco moved to Las Vegas in 2008. During the 2010 Baseball Season, Marco made handicapping history when he won a documented 25 Baseball Games in a row. Even more impressive was the fact that he never laid more than -120 in any of the 25 plays. The Sports Monitor of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, documented the 25-game winning streak. Marco is a 2 Time winner of Preferred Picks Wise Guy Football Contest. Marco's signature play is his College Football Game of the Year, as Marco has gone 26-8 with this game over his 34-year career.

Marco has been featured as a guest handicapper on several radio shows as he has been on ESPN regional and national shows, Yahoo Sports Radio, Sports Overnight America, as well as appearing on shows covering regional teams in both College and Pro sports. Marco was co-host of a successful Las Vegas Show for several years. Marco is also the go-to guy for Horse Racing information from media outlets.
