Pittsburgh @ New England

12 days for the New England offense & OC Josh McDaniels to stew over horrendous opening night performance likely has them well prepped & fully focused here. Play-calling which played into Seattle strengths despite Seahawks missing 3 of their top 4 safeties (Nick Emmanwori arguably their best overall defensive player) clearly brought a pair of problems to light. A) McDaniels was again outcoached by defensive wizardry of Seattle HC Mike MacDonald and B) New England OL is fundamentally overmatched by the Seattle defensive front. Those angles figure to be neutralized vs Pittsburgh which doesn't possess the same abilities or personnel to carry out the defensive onslaught that Seattle did. Solid opening week job done by the Pittsburgh defense but have to note the offensive limitations of Atlanta. Having to pivot mid-week to "game managing" type offense with #3 QB Cooper Rush forced into starting gave the Steelers defense far less to worry about defending. Even focusing squarely on stopping Atlanta RB Bijan Robinson they still yielded 120 yards rushing. Patriots unlikely to get caught in as many poor down & distance situations where Pittsburgh can pin their ears back and just bully a 3rd string QB (4 sacks & 5 hits on just 22 pass attempts). New England remaining receiving corps without #1 A.J. Brown (out 4 weeks/ankle) still competent enough and deeper than last season's group so that aspect should be OK especially with Steelers top cover corner Joey Porter Jr. potentially limited. Larger problem for Steelers could be their offense which had 1 TD drive on 13 possessions and gained 40+ yards on only 3 of those. New England now in Foxboro in their season opener off of a loss and vs. lesser defensive opposition all adds up to a win & cover in the 7+ range.

PLAY: New England -5

Consultant Bio

Rob Veno has been entrenched in the sports handicapping community for 33 years. He was a major component in the success of Sportsmemo from its inception as a daily radio show in 1998. His 5% Bluechip releases have become synonymous with success, and he's carved a place for himself among the nation's elite handicappers. Rob's fundamental analysis of football, basketball, and baseball on the college and pro levels has him regarded as one of the best in the business at breaking down games. Rob began to make an imprint on the Las Vegas scene in the mid-1990s with his weekly football and basketball newsletter, which contained game selections and analysis. Over 30 sportsbooks on and off the strip, plus the famous Las Vegas Gambler's Book Club and newsstands nationwide, carried the publication, which expanded his recognition. He was subsequently invited into Las Vegas' most prestigious handicapping contests of that time, the Stardust Invitational in 1996 and 2004 and the Sunset Station Invitational in 2000. A veteran of sports handicapping radio, Rob began in 1992 by co-hosting a weekly Friday night show at 840 AM KVEG. He went on to do numerous live shows as a guest analyst from casino sportsbooks across the Las Vegas Valley, working with a litany of respected hosts and the most recognized handicappers in the business. Rob finally settled in as one of the mainstays on the daily Vegas Sportswire betting show, which ultimately became the famed Sportsmemo Radio Show and subsequent Podcast. His expertise has been heard on radio stations across the country over the years as he has done a multitude of guest analyst segments. Rob joined WagerTalk in the summer of 2020 and has quickly become a prominent member of their world-class handicapping roster. Rob is a Connecticut native, and after spending 11 years in Las Vegas from 1991-2002, he now resides outside of Philadelphia with his wife.
