THE PLAY: Total Under 51.5 (-105)
The Rams’ defensive superiority, combined with Arizona’s passing-game limitations, provides a strong foundation for an Under wager. Los Angeles ranks third in defensive EPA per play and fourth in defensive success rate, performing approximately 4.4 points per game better than an average defense. That creates a difficult matchup for an Arizona offense that has been reasonably functional on a down-to-down basis but remains severely limited in creating explosive plays.
That distinction is important. The Cardinals have operated with a pass-heavy approach on 65.4% of their offensive snaps, and Jacoby Brissett has produced an impressive 81.2 PFF passing grade. Yet the offense has largely taken on the familiar shape of a Brissett-led unit: efficient and turnover-averse underneath, but sack-prone and extremely limited vertically. Arizona ranks last in explosive pass rate by a substantial margin, while Brissett ranks 30th in completions traveling at least 20 yards through the air.
That weakness runs directly into the strength of the Los Angeles defense. The Rams have allowed the fewest deep completions in the NFL, substantially reducing Arizona’s chances of generating the quick-strike touchdowns that can threaten a high game total. If the Cardinals are forced to manufacture points through extended drives, every sack, penalty or failed third down becomes considerably more damaging.
Arizona’s personnel issues compound the matchup disadvantage. Starting tackle Paris Johnson Jr., who carries a 77.6 PFF grade, is unavailable, along with tight end Hunter Long and guard Isaiah Adams. Adams' placement on IR comes less than a week after Johnson was ruled out for the season with a torn left biceps. Running back Jeremiyah Love, who sustained an ankle injury against the Giants in Week 4, did not practice Wednesday, and head coach Mike LaFleur said the Cardinals want to "get this ankle right and do it the right way.”
Those absences create additional concerns against a talented Los Angeles defensive front. Meanwhile, Los Angeles will be missing left tackle Alaric Jackson, whose suspension for punching Bradley Chubb after Monday night's game was reduced from two games to one on Wednesday. Jackson’s PFF Offensive Grades: 2024: 78.4; 2025: 84.2; 2026: 76.4.
The Cardinals’ underlying efficiency also points toward limited scoring. Arizona is averaging -0.07 EPA per rush and just 0.01 EPA per pass, albeit against the league’s sixth-toughest schedule. The Cardinals therefore enter this matchup with neither an efficient rushing attack nor a consistent downfield passing game, leaving relatively few obvious paths to offensive production.
Historical Systems Support the Under
My technical database provides additional support:
• Rams, Games 5-8 since 2015: 32-12 Under (72.7%; +38.8% ROI);
• Rams, Week 4 and beyond vs. opponents averaging fewer than 24.5 rushing attempts per game: 61-32 Under (65.6%; +25.2% ROI);
• Double-digit underdogs since 2014: 165-117 Under (58.5%; +11.7% ROI);
Los Angeles has also taken a step back offensively, ranking sixth by PFF while generating -0.05 EPA per rush. The inefficient ground game could make it difficult for the Rams to consistently convert a favorable game script into points. Stafford exploiting Arizona's vulnerable defense remains the clearest threat to the Under, but his 67.4 PFF passing grade and 30.3 passer rating under pressure suggest the Rams will not score at will. Take the Under as Jeff Keim's Free Pick Winner for Sunday, October 18.
