THE PLAY: Denver Broncos +2.5 (-105)
Both teams enter Thursday night following difficult division games, but their outcomes and trajectories point in different directions. Denver escaped with an unattractive win over the previously winless Chargers, while Seattle suffered a damaging loss to San Francisco fueled by four turnovers.
Seattle’s concerns extend beyond one poor result. The Seahawks are without Kenneth Walker, and their defense has not matched last season’s level. Over the past three games, Seattle has allowed 33 points to Washington, 23 to the Chargers, and 32 to San Francisco; turnovers contributed heavily to last week’s total, but the recent defensive trend remains troubling.
Denver’s offense was not impressive in its victory. Even after Sean Payton assumed play-calling duties, the Broncos generated only 106 rushing yards and 118 passing yards. They benefited from three Chargers turnovers and a costly decision by Jim Harbaugh, but finding a way to win—rather than playing well in defeat—can sometimes be the beginning of a positive stretch.
Public perception may favor Seattle to bounce back after its turnover-filled loss, but that response is not guaranteed. Teams coming off major losses can carry over the disappointment, particularly when they must travel for a Thursday-night game in Denver, one of the league’s more difficult road environments.
Denver’s defense is the central reason to consider the Broncos. It has played well enough to keep games close and could create problems for Sam Darnold. The Chargers limited Darnold to 148 passing yards, while San Francisco held him to 162; that level of production may not be enough for Seattle to win on the road in Denver.
