THE PLAY: UTEP -106
A former 5-Star prospect, Malachi Nelson remains the starter for the UTEP Miners after throwing 4 interceptions last week and pulled from the game. Malachi has had a decent season so far with 228 yards per game, but he has completed only 55.6% of his passes. Albeit, Malachi threw for 2 interceptions and 0 touchdowns, but he did complete 24 of 36 passes for 209 yards against a stout Texas defense with little to no running attack for help within the offense. The running game needs help with the UTEP leading rusher has just 205 yards over 5 games but they face a Liberty defense that has given up 225 yards rushing per game on the season. Malachi has no shortage of targets to throw to with a deep receiving group and could see more time with an added running game that they have been missing this season.
Liberty started the season off well with a nice win over Maine, but they have now dropped 4 games in a row with a 10-point difference as the closest game in the 4-game stretch. Ethan Vasko is the starting quarterback who has been dealing with shoulder and neck issues which has thrown the backup who threw for just 77 yards last week against Old Dominion. Ethan is set to play tonight after sitting out last week but I am not sold that he is 100% healthy and he now is set to play behind an offensive line that has given up 14 sacks on the season and should be without 2 starters who are now down with injuries. Liberty should lean on their running game tonight with 2 solid players in Evan Dickens and Caden Williams, but they will face off against a good UTEP run defense who should be stacking the box and making Ethan beat them with his arm.
