THE PLAY: Arizona Diamondbacks -127 M Kelly (RHP) Must Start

The Padres went into Wednesday’s game against the Dodgers with a chance to tie LA for the NL West lead. They blew a bases loaded opportunity early, but had the bases loaded again late with their best hitters --Luis Arraez and Manny Machado -- up next, needing only a single to tie the game. Arraez popped out, Machado hit a weak grounder on a 3-0 count, and the Padres rally was over.  They didn’t have another baserunner the rest of the game. Following a day off, the Padres looked lifeless in defeat on Friday in Arizona.  Last night, San Diego suffered a brutal ninth inning meltdown, blowing a four run lead and losing on a walk-off fielder’s choice groundout.  This team is having a bad run RIGHT NOW; a squad worth betting against this weekend! 

The Padres are dealing with starting pitching woes – multiple injuries and only three six inning starts in their last 17 games.  Manager Mike Shildt: “We're pushing, piecing it together. But we're going to need some depth out of some starters."  Nick Pivetta hasn’t recorded an out past the sixth inning since April, he’s been hit hard in each of his last two outings and the bullpen behind him is clearly vulnerable again today.  The Padres are 2-4 in Pivetta’s last six trips to the hill, and his splits clearly show vulnerabilities both on the road and in daytime starts.

Arizona is trending in the opposite direction.  The D-backs had been dealing with starting pitching injuries and a dismal bullpen, but they’ve turned it around of late: five straight victories; 9-3 in their last dozen games.  Merrill Kelly hasn’t allowed a single run in two June starts – both D-backs victories, worth ‘listing’ and ‘betting on’ this afternoon!  Take the Diamondbacks.
