THE PLAY: Troy -5.0 (-108)
2% Troy (7:00 ET): I’m at the point where if Georgia Southern makes me look foolish again, then so be it. After entering the Sun Belt Tournament as the 10-seed, the Eagles have shockingly won five times in five days to reach the Final (pulled four outright upsets). This was a team that shot just 31.4% from three in conference play during the regular season (11th of 14 teams), yet has managed to hit a completely unsustainable 42% from beyond the arc over the L5 days (on high volume, no less). Monday night, with an automatic NCAA Tournament berth hanging in the balance, Georgia Southern will face top seed Troy, who has a massive rest edge, having needed to win only one game to reach this Tournament Final.
Speaking to the "unsustainability" of Georgia Southern’s three-point shooting during this tournament run, last night saw them go just 7 of 26 (27%) from three. So we’re already starting to see them slow down in that regard. Tonight, they’re up against the team that was #1 in the SBC in three-point percentage allowed (30.3%). Sure enough, when these teams met in the regular season, Troy held Ga Southern to just 11 of 32 (34%) from three in an 83-78 win and cover as 4.5-point road favorites. Last night, Troy held Southern Miss (who was playing their fourth game in as many days) to a paltry 2 of 19 (11%) from three.
Don’t be fooled by that 78-70 final score either. Troy dominated Southern Miss virtually wire to wire and was up by as many as 19 at one point. This despite shooting just 3 of 17 (18%) themselves from three. In that lone regular season matchup vs. Ga Southern, the Trojans averaged 1.3 points per possession. So they had their way offensively. I suspect Troy will be a lot better from three tonight than they were last night while Ga Southern’s three-point shooting clip is clearly due to regress. Troy also won't give up as many offensive rebounds as Marshall did last night. But, more than anything else, this is about the massive rest advantage. While Troy is playing just its second game in the tournament, Ga Southern is playing for an unprecedented sixth time in six days. 2% Troy (Play to -6)
