Baz comes into this matchup looking red hot, but there is an important contextual factor that the market may be overlooking. His last two starts came against his former team, a situation where motivation was naturally at its peak. He delivered in those spots, but now he finds himself in a classic letdown scenario after back-to-back emotionally charged outings.
The matchup itself is also far less favorable. Baz has historically shown more vulnerability against left-handed hitters, and Boston is built to exploit that weakness. The Red Sox are expected to send at least six lefties to the plate, with seven or even eight a realistic possibility depending on the lineup configuration.
On the other side, Baltimore's offense has been one of the weakest in baseball against left-handed pitching recently. Over the last 14 days, the Orioles rank bottom two in wRC+, wOBA, and OPS versus southpaws. That is bad news with Early on the mound, who has surrendered just five total runs across his last four starts and continues to pitch at an elite level.
