Washington Capitals vs New York Islanders Betting Analysis

While the Washington Capitals have been eliminated from this year’s playoffs ahead of Monday’s clash against the New York Islanders, that’s not the case for the Islanders who are fighting tooth and nail for their chance to take part in the post-season dance with only two games left in the regular season.

The Islanders put together back-to-back wins against the Tampa Bay Lightning and Philadelphia Flyers respectively across recent games, and are in the driver’s seat for a wild-card spot because of that, but can’t avoid a slip-up here on Monday with the Pittsburgh Penguins right behind them in the standings.

This will be the fourth and final meeting between the two teams this year, with the Islanders winning just one of the three contests so far and owning a relatively poor recent head-to-head record in Washington also, winning just two of the last seven matchups against the Capitals in this venue.

Sorokin Not As Comfortable On The Road This Season

While there’s no denying how good Islander’s goaltender Ilya Sorokin has been this year, his best numbers have come at home, with his road starts generating some slightly shakier numbers overall.

Sorokin has allowed an average of 3.25 goals against per game across his last four road starts compared with just 1.00 GAPG at home, and has a 2.87 GAPG average away from home this season also compared with just 1.91 GAPG in New York.

Ovechkin Key For Capitals

Alex Ovechkin continues to be listed as day-to-day regarding his return to the Capitals lineup after picking up an upper-body injury against Montreal last week.

That’s a serious concern for this Washington team ahead of Monday night’s game as the Capitals have gone a miserable 0-7-0 this season without their captain in the starting roster.

Washington Capitals vs New York Islanders Expert Prediction

The Washington Capitals definitely appear to be a team who have simply mailed it in this season with little left to play for but pride at this point.

With potentially no Ovechkin in the lineup on top of a current six-game losing run, it’s very difficult to look at anything other than a New York Islanders victory on Monday given everything at stake for them in the playoff race.

Take the New York Islanders to get the victory on Monday night against the struggling Washington Capitals in DC.
