Tampa Bay Lightning vs Colorado Avalanche Analysis

The Tampa Bay Lightning bounced back with a vengeance on Monday night blowing out the Colorado Avalanche at home by a 6-2 scoreline to close the series deficit to just one game ahead of Wednesday’s crucial Game 4.

Gabriel Landeskog opened the scoring for the Avalanche early in that game before an Anthony Cirelli equalizer landed for the Lightning just five minutes later.

The Lightning then opened up a 3-1 lead over the Avalanche before Landeskog struck again to make it 3-2 early in the second period, but that was to be the last high point for Colorado in that game as it was all Tampa Bay from that point of the contest on as they went on to score three unanswered goals and take the win.

Colorado have won four of their five head-to-heads against Tampa Bay this season and seven of their eight postseason road games as well, so the Avalanche will no doubt be looking to extend both of those impressive runs here on Wednesday inside Amalie Arena.

Colorado Power Play Juggernauts

The Tampa Bay Lightning have enjoyed the greater number of overall power plays over this postseason so far, owning a 74 to 56 power play advantage over the Colorado Avalanche in these playoffs.

They’ve failed to take advantage of that superiority as the Lightning’s power play conversion rate this postseason is at a paltry 20.27% (good for bottom half in the league if converted to regular season form).

The Avalanche however have been absolutely lights out on that same dynamic, averaging a colossal 33.93% power play conversion rate this postseason, the best in the playoffs by a fair distance and far above even Toronto’s #1 regular season rate of 27.27%.

Vasilevskiy Continues Dominant Home Form

One of the best goalies in hockey right now, Andrei Vasilevskiy, continued his dominant home form on Monday night saving 37 of 39 shots against an up till that point red-hot Avalanche offense.

That continues on from Vasilevskiy’s last home start against the New York Rangers also where he averaged a stellar .952 SV% and follows on from a standout regular season as well where Vasilevskiy averaged the 2nd highest number of quality starts in the league behind only Nashville Predators goalie Juuse Saros.

Tampa Bay Lightning vs Colorado Avalanche Prediction

The Colorado Avalanche have given up 6 goals just once over this postseason so far and came back in the very next game with a dominant shutout of the high flying Edmonton Oilers.

By contrast Tampa Bay have scored 6 goals or more just once over this postseason so far and came back in the very next game with a losing effort against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Tampa Bay have already shown their mettle at home over these playoffs, losing just once at home over the entire postseason so far and none since the first round, so while I expect a much better effort from the Avalanche tonight, I’m not in the habit of fading a team that have won 41 of their last 56 contests at home (73.2% WP).

A safer play is the Under 6 goals in this one as I expect a much tighter game from both defenses tonight as Tampa Bay successfully regrouped after that 7-0 demolition in Game 2 and we expect a similar effort from this Colorado Avalanche defense on Wednesday also.

With Vasilevskiy’s home form a significant factor also, we like the Under 6 goals between the Colorado Avalanche and the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday in what should be another electric encounter in Game 4.

Prediction: Under 6 Goals Scored
