Houston Texans vs Indianapolis Colts Predictions

  • Indianapolis Colts -10 at Houston Texans
  • Total: 45 Points
  • The Colts have won six of the last seven meetings in this series.
  • The under is 5-1 in Houston’s last six games.

Key Stats:
-Texans 2nd worst rush defense allowing 135.6 yards per game
-Colts 4th best rush offense rushing for 144.5 yards per game
-Colts #1 team in takeaways with 27
-Texans lowest scoring team in the league averaging 14.9 points per game

The Texans travel to Indianapolis to take on the Colts, and while both are coming off seven point losses, Houston is coming off a loss to the hapless Jets, and the Colts are coming off a loss to the defending Super Bowl champs. This game opened at Colts -7 and quickly moved to -10 which is completely understandable, but is this too much of a line move and can be bet the Texans in this game?

As a resident of Indy and a Colts fan, I can’t tell you how nice it is to not have to play Deshaun Watson twice a year anymore. He averaged 327 yards in offense against us and had a passer rating of 100.0. He just feasted on the Colts, but these Texans are obviously much worse.

The argument for betting on the Texans is that they are 2-9 straight up, but 5-6 against the spread, and three of those covers were games Tyrod Taylor started. I could also make the case that this is a MASSIVE let down spot for the Colts. Coming off a tough loss to Tampa, they play Houston then a bye and then a huge prime time game against New England. This “Sandwich” game trips up teams all the time, and Indy could certainly be looking ahead.

I just don’t see Frank Reich and company looking ahead though. The Colts are 6-6 and while the division might be lost as they are two games back and have lost twice to Tennessee, they have to have a little hope as Tennessee is completely reeling from injuries and the Colts have a real shot at a playoff birth as it’s a crowd with five teams being 6-6 or 6-5 in the AFC.

The other obvious glaring situation with this game is the Colts dominant rush offense going up against the Texans who can’t stop the walk, let alone the run. The Houston offense is also atrocious as evident by their performance against the Jets yesterday when they threw for 158 yards and rushed for 96 yards against a team who is 4th worst defending the pass and 6th worst defending the run.

I’ve searched the stats to find a way to back the Texans, and I truly can’t find anything. They played earlier this season and the Colts won 31-3 in a game that looked more like a bye week than an NFL game. The season stats for the Colts defense took a hit yesterday when they gave up 38 points to Tampa and a monster game to Fournette, but we know that the Bucs and Texans aren’t in the same league. Sometimes, we as bettors can over think a game, and I don’t want to do that here. I’m backing the Colts, but here is another option if you’re worried about garbage time, which I am not.

The Colts have been a great first half scoring team averaging 14.9 points a first half this season, and 22.7 their last three so you can take the Colts First Half Team Total Over.

Official Play: Colts -10
Alternate Play: Colts OVER 14.5 Team Total First Half

Houston Texans vs Indianapolis Colts Analysis from The GoldSheet

The Colts had little trouble taking care of Houston in the first meeting this year, rolling to a 31-3 victory as Carson Wentz threw for 223 yds., 2 TDs and no ints., while Jonathan Taylor averaged 10.4 ypc (145 YR) with 2 TDs. Results like that are nothing new in this series, where the Colts are 8-2 SU and against the points when these two AFC South foes meet since 2017. Houston is only 1-7 SU last 8 at NRG Stadium, and series history has to give the Colts the edge, especially with QB Carson Wentz likely to have better looks dropping down from facing tougher defenses of Tampa Bay and Buffalo the last 2 weeks. Play Indianapolis.
