The History of the Arizona Cardinals: The Oldest NFL Franchise 

The Arizona Cardinals are one of the most storied franchises in NFL history. They are the oldest continuously run professional football team in the United States, and one of only two NFL charter member franchises still in operation since the league’s founding, the other also from Chicago in the Bears. 

The Cardinals have a long and colorful history, dating back to their founding in 1898 as the Morgan Athletic Club in Chicago. They have won two NFL championships, in 1925 and 1947, and have appeared in the Super Bowl once, losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII. 

The Cardinals have also had their share of great players over the years, including Hall of Famers Larry Wilson, Larry Fitzgerald, and Jim Hart. They are a proud franchise with a rich tradition, and they continue to be one of the most popular teams in the NFL. 

Early Years of Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals’ early years were a bit nomadic. They played in Chicago for their first 40 seasons, but then moved to St. Louis in 1960. They stayed in St. Louis for 28 seasons, before moving to Phoenix in 1988. 

The Cardinals were not always successful in their early years. They had some winning seasons, but they also had their share of losing seasons.

The Great Larry Wilson

Another great player in Cardinals history is Larry Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald is a wide receiver who played for the Cardinals from 2004 to 2020. He is the Cardinals’ all-time leading receiver in terms of receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. 

Fitzgerald was a dominant player on the field. He was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and a three-time All-Pro. He also led the NFL in receptions twice. 

Fitzgerald was a great playmaker on the field and was the leader on the Cardinals offense. He was a key reason why the Cardinals were one of the most exciting teams in the NFL in the 2000s and 2010s. 

The Super Bowl Appearance 

The Cardinals’ only Super Bowl appearance came in 2009. They lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII. The Cardinals were the NFC champions that year, and they were led by quarterback Kurt Warner. 

The Cardinals were underdogs in Super Bowl XLIII, but they gave the Steelers a good game. Trailing by double digits most of the game, the Cardinals comeback effort came up short in the 4th quarter ultimately losing 27-23.

The Present Day 

The Cardinals are currently in a rebuilding phase. They have not made the playoffs since 2021, and they have not won a playoff game since 2015. However, they have some young talent, and they are hoping to be competitive again soon.
