*The quarterback position has dominated the MVP, winning the award in each of the last 12 seasons and 17 of the last 18 seasons. The last non-quarterback to win the award was Adrian Peterson in 2012. 

*Josh Allen won the MVP last season and Lamar Jackson was the runner-up, Jackson and Patrick Mahomes will both be looking to become the 7th player to win three MVPs. Only two players have won more than three: Peyton Manning (5) and Aaron Rodgers (4). During the last seven seasons, Jackson, Mahomes and Rodgers have each won two MVPs.

*Eleven players have won the Super Bowl and MVP in the same season and all but four of those also won the Super Bowl MVP. 

2025 NFL MVP Prediction: Joe Burrow, Bengals (+650)

You could argue that Joe Burrow should have won this award last season if it wasn’t for the Cincinnati Bengals missing the postseason.

Burrow was statistically elite as he led the league in passing yards (4,918), touchdowns (43) and completions (460).

He also posted the 3rd best passer rating (108.5) and 4th best completion percentage (70.6%). In the end, Josh Allen deserved to join Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes on the list of MVP award winners after he lifted the Buffalo Bills to success in their first season without Stefon Diggs.

That could benefit Burrow this season as a narrative play with the media often looking to “spread the love” among worthy players.

Burrow retained his key weapons in Ja’Marr Chase & Tee Higgins, and he will need to continue to chuck it as Cincinnati did little to improve on a running game that ranked 30th in the NFL.

The Bengals defense was horrendous in 2024, but the coaching staff did get an upgrade in new defensive coordinator Al Golden.

However, it becomes a make-or-break season as they need to get veteran EDGE Trey Hendrickson and first-round draft pick Shemar Stewart on the field.

Regardless the success of this team is on Burrows shoulders, and he’s thrived in that situation in the past. This is perfect recipe for an MVP if Burrow can stay healthy and push this team to double digit victories.

2025 MVP Sleeper Prediction: Baker Mayfield, Buccaneers (+2500)

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are favored to win the NFC South (-105) for the 5th straight season and that makes Baker Mayfield and interesting MVP longshot option at +2500.

Mayfield is coming off a 2024 campaign where he threw for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns while posting a 71.4% completion percentage.

The Buccaneers already had fantastic weapons in Pro Bowlers Mike Evans & Chris Godwin and now they utilized their #1 draft pick on another stellar pass catcher in Ohio State product Emeka Egbuka.

Godwin became a safety-blanket for Mayfield early in the 2024 campaign as he reeled in 84.3% of passes thrown his way and Mayfield still logged those ridiculous numbers despite Godwin missing the majority of the season with an ankle injury.

Running back Bucky Irving also proved himself as a home run threat that can occupy the attention of opposing defenders. Continuity won’t be an issue in Tampa Bay as they retained all 11 of their offensive starting players.

Josh Grizzard is technically the new offensive coordinator but he’s very familiar with the passing attack after serving as the passing game coordinator in 2024. Mayfield has everything in place to put up an MVP-caliber campaign as a longshot.
