NFL Coach of the Year Betting Trends

•Only one coach has won the award despite his team finishing below .500 in the standings that season (Jimmy Johnson in 1990).

•There have been 13 multiple winners of the Coach of the Year award, with three coaches (Don Shula, Chuck Knox, Bill Belichick) winning 3+ times.

•There has not been a back-to-back Coach of the Year winner since 1982 and 1983 (Joe Gibbs).

2025 Coach of the Year Prediction: Mike Vrabel, Patriots (+750)

The NFL has recently moved away from giving this award to head coaches who exceed expectations in their first season as Kevin Stefanski (Cleveland) and Kevin O’Connell (Minnesota) have won the last two years.

However, we could see a return to the norm as 4 of the prior 6 winners did claim the award after their first campaign.

The strongest candidate out of that bunch is Mike Vrabel who played in the NFL for 14 seasons including 8 years with the Patriots.

This will be Vrabel’s second crack at being an NFL head coach as he spent six seasons in Tennessee while leading the Titans to four winning seasons.

Vrabel has the advantage of joining a Patriots organization who hasn’t seen a winning season since 2021, and they are a combined 8-26 during the last two years.

New England has a rising star in second year quarterback Drake Maye, and they bolstered their squad via the draft and free agency.

The Pats already have a strong defense anchored by third year cornerback Christian Gonzalez and it doesn’t hurt Vrabel’s chances that they have the 3rd easiest schedule based on their opponent’s total win percentage from 2024.

2025 Coach of the Year Sleeper Prediction: Kyle Shanahan, 49ers (+2000)

Sleepers take home this award at an alarming rate, so longshots often offer great value. We have seen a coach with preseason odds of 20-1 or better win the award in 7 of the last 9 seasons including a 50-1 with Sean McVay back in 2017.

It’s actually pretty shocking that Kyle Shanahan has never won this award but that could actually help him get votes in a close race.

The 2024 campaign was a complete disaster for the San Francisco 49ers as they finished 6-11 after being ravished by injuries.

However, this is still a highly talented squad that was playing in the Superbowl or NFC Championship in each of the previous three seasons.

Now Christian McCaffrey is fully healthy, and Brock Purdy got paid which should help give the Niners some stability.

The departure of Deebo Samuel shouldn’t hurt too much as he was an erratic route runner and Demarcus Robinson & Ricky Pearsall should be able to pick up some of that slack.

The 49ers also have the easiest strength of schedule in the NFL and that could set them up to win the division and grab the voters’ attention for Shanahan.
