Toronto Raptors vs Philadelphia 76ers Analysis

The Philadelphia 76ers travel to Toronto for a battle with the Raptors on Tuesday night. The 76ers are 17-16 and have won 11 of their first 19 road games. On Sunday, Philadelphia took care of business an won comfortably over the Washington Wizards by a score of 117-96. The Toronto Raptors are 14-16 and are currently tied with the Atlanta Hawks for 10th place in the Eastern Conference.

The short-handed Raptors were absolutely smoked by the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday by a score of 144-99. The 76ers didn’t have Joel Embiid when they lost to Toronto 115-109 back in November, while the Raptors were without Pascal Siakim. However, tonight’s matchup should be different, like everything else in the NBA nowadays.

The Philadelphia 76ers looked sharp on both ends of the floor on Sunday against the Washington Wizards. They took full advantage of the Wiz being without Bradley Beal for a 2nd straight game, due to Covid protocols. However the 76ers have been running cold recently, they have lost 5 of their last 8 games overall.

Andre Drummond and Shake Milton are both listed as out for this game after entering the leagues health and safety protocols. Milton averages double digits so that will effect their scoring, while Drummond being out takes rebounds away from a team already struggling on the glass.

The Raptors’ offense has been better on the road than at home, and they will be missing key players. So this could be a great opportunity for the 76ers to improve on a defense that ranks 19th and an offense that ranks 24th in scoring. Joel Embiid and Tobias Harris should both be able to feast on a decimated Raptors front court.

The Raptors were missing 10 players including all of their starters against Cleveland in their last game on Sunday afternoon. The Cavs took full advantage and won by 45 points, their largest margin of victory this season. Yuta Watanabe was the lone bright spot, scoring 26 points while snagging 13 boards. The Raptors seemed destined to lose that game, as they only had 8 healthy players, all of which backups.

Toronto could get Gary Trent Jr, Pascal Siakim, Fred VanVleet and Khem Birch back tonight as all are questionable to return from Covid protocols. Granted, the team is still missing OG Anunoby, Scottie Barnes and Precious Achiuwa. However, from what we’ve seen recently, none of this is guaranteed. On the season the Raptors rank in the bottom third of the league in both scoring and defensive rating. They average only 106 points a game, ranking them 21st and only 20th in defensive rating.

The Philadelphia 76ers are 6.5-point road favorites with a total of 214 points. The 76ers are only 3-7 against the spread in their last 10 games, while Toronto is 4-1 ATS in their last 5. However, this is a different situation as the Raptors will be short-handed and getting players back who are in poor shape. Philadelphia is in a revenge spot and will be looking to return the favor for their November loss. Embiid and Harris would wreak havoc on this frontcourt if they were at full strength. After what we saw the Cavs do to the Raptors, I’m going to lay the 6.5 points with the 76ers.

Toronto Raptors vs Philadelphia 76ers Preview from GoldSheet

Philadelphia having some problems lately, dropping 5 of its last 8 SU, as Philly ranked 23rd in net differential in that period despite having Joel Embiid missing just 1 game and scoring 28 ppg and grabbing 11 rpg. The plus side for the Sixers is that Tyrese Maxey has returned, but F Danny Green, backup G Shake Milton and backup C Andre Drummond are all out or iffy due to Covid protocols.

That’s nothing compared with Toronto’s bout with Covid, as all 5 starters, (Scottie Barnes, Pascal Siakam, OG Anunoby, Fred VanVleet and Gary Trent Jr.) are sitting in Covid protocol. Only Trent and Siakam are listed day-to-day and not definitely out for this game, so HC Nick Nurse is going to continue to get a good look at all his “others” and literally is telling his team to “wait till next year” (his starters are all expected to clear by New Year’s Eve or on Monday.

Bit of a revenge game for the Sixers in this one, as Toronto took a 115-109 decision in first meeting of the season in Philly when the Raptors were at nearly full strength (no Siakam), but the Sixers were without Embiid.
