San Antonio Spurs vs Boston Celtics Predictions

  • San Antonio Spurs +3 vs Boston Celtics
  • Total: 216 Points
  • The Spurs have covered the point spread in six of the last seven meetings in this series.

The Boston Celtics head to San Antonio for a Friday night showdown with the San Antonio Spurs at the AT&T Center. The Celtics are coming off a 123-104 loss against the Brooklyn Nets, a loss that ended a three game winning streak. Meanwhile the Spurs lost their 6th consecutive game to the Atlanta Hawks 124-106. Boston is now 10-9 straight up with a 10-8-1 record against the spread. San Antonio is 4-13 SU, however they sit at 8-9 ATS.

Last season these squads split their head to head meetings with the Spurs winning 110-106 in San Antonio and the Celtics winning an overtime thriller 143-140 in Boston. However both rosters are now constructed completely differently as the Spurs no longer have DeMar Derozan, LaMarcus Aldridge and Patty Mills while the Celtics lost Kemba Walker and Evan Fournier and added Al Horford and Dennis Schroder.

We will see what the Celtics are made of as they begin a grueling stretch where they play 7 of their next 8 games on the road. The Celtics have gotten the job done with defense and rebounding, they have a defensive rating of 105.4 good for 10th in the association while ranking 6th in rebounds per game. It’s sounds crazy to say, but Boston’s 123-104 loss against Brooklyn was actually encouraging.

Things got chippy between the two teams and new head coach Ime Udoka picked a technical foul as his players felt that James Harden was pushing off on the offensive end of the floor and holding them on the defensive side of the court. This has been a complaint shared by other head coaches that have played against Harden recently. Udoka’s team responded by becoming even more aggressive on defense, they went on a run and cut the lead but ultimately fell short on offense. It’s going to hard for Boston to beat quality opponents when Marcus Smart leads your team in scoring with 20 points and your two young cornerstones of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown combine for only 9 for 31 from the field.

On the season the Boston offense ranks 13th in points scored with 108.1 points a game. It will be interesting to see how this team gels going forward now that Jaylen Brown has a few games under his belt since returning from injury.

San Antonio has major problems as the Spurs have lost 6 straight, a streak that could easily balloon to 14 as they also begin a brutal stretch of their own. Following the game against Boston the Spurs have games against the Wizards, Blazers, Warriors, Suns, Knicks and two games against the Nuggets. The Spurs have struggled with defense and rebounding, they rank 25th allowing 110.8 points a game while only averaging 43.8 rebounds a game good for 27th in the association.

Offensively the Spurs score an average of 107.3 points a game which ranks them 17th. The lone bright spot for the San Antonio Spurs has been Dejounte Murray. Murray leads the team in scoring, rebounding and assists with averages of 18.1 points, 8.2 rebounds and 8 assists per game. For the Spurs to win against quality opponents, Murray will have to control the game on both ends of the floor which is alot to ask of any player.

The Boston Celtics are favored by 3 points in this contest, with the total set at 216 points. The Celtics have covered the number in 8 of their last 12 games and the Spurs have failed to cover the spread in 5 of their last 6. It will be interesting to see who control’s the pace as the under has cashed in 5 of Boston’s last 6 road games with the over cashing in 5 of the Spurs last 7 overall.

If the Celtics scorers get going it could prove to be a problem for the Spurs to keep up with them. The Celtics were in far better form prior to their loss to Brooklyn and it shouldn’t take them long to rediscover their rhythm against a vulnerable team like the Spurs.

While this is a road game for Boston, it is the first game of the trip and the Celtics know how important it is to get off on the right foot. This spread seems awfully light at only -3 as we are essentially asking for a Celtics victory. We will confidently lay the 3 points, making Boston -3 our official play in this showdown on Friday night.

Official Play: Boston Celtics -3

San Antonio Spurs vs Boston Celtics Analysis from The GoldSheet

First meeting between these two, with Boston alternating pointspread wins and losses over its past eight games. Celtics have won eight of their last 12, and are coming off some rude treatment at home, as the Nets came to the TD Garden and hammered the Celtics 123-104 on Wednesday night. The Spurs have lost six-straight, ranking 29th in the league in that stretch, when they’ve played absolutely no defense, yielding 116 points per 100 possessions. Celtics have gone over three of last four while the Spurs games have played to higher-than-expected scores in five of last seven, so would look for an over result in addition to a Boston win.
