Phoenix Suns vs San Antonio Spurs Predictions

  • Phoenix Suns -7.5 vs San Antonio Spurs
  • Total: 216.5 Points
  • San Antonio has won ten of the last 11 visits to the Footprint Center in Phoenix, although the Suns have won the last three in the series, including a 115-111 decision in San Antonio on Noember 22.

Interesting that the team coming into this matchup with the impressive winning streak is San Antonio, and not Phoenix. The Spurs have won four straight against solid opponents (on paper) and the Suns will try and start a new winning streak as they are coming off the brutal loss to San Antonio. The books expect Phoenix to cruise as they are a -7.5 favorite with a total of 216.5, and with both teams coming into this game rested, can we find a bet to pad our payroll? Absolutely we can.

Let’s not overreact to San Antonio’s four game winning streak. They beat Boston and Washington and then went on the road to beat Portland, who is struggling without Lillard, and then got an early Christmas present when they got to play Golden State the night after the huge game against Phoenix in the most obvious let down spot of the season.

Four wins in a row is great for this team, but the books aren’t overreacting and neither should we. Before those four wins they lost six on a row. San Antonio has actually been a decent ATS team as they are 12-9 this season and 6-5 on the road

The winning streak that Phoenix went on was incredible and of course all good things must come to an end, and it will be interesting to see how they respond. Last year they were underrated by the books and ended up as the best team in the league covering spreads, but this year they are right around .500 ATS going 12-11 so far, and 6-6 at home. They beat the Spurs earlier this season 115-111 in San Antonio where both teams were healthy so the Spurs won’t be intimidated facing this team.

I really like the over in this game, even without Devin Booker. The Spurs have been putting up points as they’ve put up 112 or more in three straight games, and there are a couple matchups that favor scoring. Dejounte Murray has become a legit scorer and the Suns give up over 23 points a game to point guards, so I’ll expect Murray to have success.

On the other side, San Antonio does not handle bigs very well as they give up over 20 points a game to power forwards, and over 23 points a game to centers which sets up great for Ayton. Without Booker we saw contributions from everyone on the Suns roster against Detroit, and to an extent against Golden State.

Phoenix is 4th in pace of play and San Antonio is tied for 14th so expect a fluid game from both teams who are rested. I think the scoring of the Spurs guards will keep this game close to avoid a blowout, and I expect the game to look similar to their first game they played against each other earlier this season.

OFFICIAL PLAY: OVER 216.5

Phoenix Suns vs San Antonio Spurs Analysis from The GoldSheet

Phoenix probably a bit looser now that the 18-game winning streak was snapped in San Francisco on Friday, saving the Suns comparisons to the Laker team with Jerry West, Gail Goodrich and Wilt Chamberlain carrying LA to a record 33 straight back in 1972. Suns have had a few days to regroup and refocus on starting a new streak against San Antonio and keeping pace with the Warriors. The Spurs are enjoying their best stretch of the season, having won and covered 4 straight and ranking 3rd in net rating and in defensive efficiency in that streak. The last time the Suns lost a game they bounced back with a win but not a cover and see a similar scenario this time around. Play San Antonio.
