Phoenix Suns at San Antonio Spurs Analysis

The Spurs will host the Phoenix Suns on Monday, and the big story in this game is the health of Deandre Ayton. He twisted his ankle yesterday and is game time decision, but I would be surprised if he plays on the back to back. That’s a big loss for Phoenix as we saw them struggle without him in a few games last month. Speaking of struggling, the Spurs have lost nine out of 11 games, but they’ll look to get a win today as they are +4.5 underdogs with a total of 227.5. Let’s find a way to make this game a profitable one for us.

Spurned Spurs

The Spurs won against the Clippers on Saturday, and that’s only the second win for them since December 27th. They’ve been missing different players from game to game, and it’s been a rough stretch for them, and outside of Dejounte Murray they don’t really have anyone that scares opposing teams.. In their last 13 games they’ve lost, they’ve given up 110 points or more, and in their last two wins they’ve given up 97 or less. They are 3-7 against the spread in their last 10 games, but they might have a real nice advantage tonight if Ayton is out. For the season, they give up 24 points to centers, so not having to face Ayton would be a big boost to their chances tonight.

Suns Shining

The Suns were happy to get Ayton back and they’ve won three straight, but with the tweaked ankle we probably won’t see a long winning streak like we saw earlier in the season. Booker has been on a tear scoring 30, 35 the last two games, but for this game I’m going to go back to December 27th when Ayton started to miss time. Phoenix went 1-2 the three games without him, but then won three straight games money line and against the spread before his return, so it felt like it took a couple games to figure out their rotation without him, and that was a short time ago so I have to believe they won’t have problems tonight. Yesterday he left the game early, and Phoenix went on to beat Detroit 135-108.

Phoenix Suns at San Antonio Spurs Prediction

The Suns have recently been running up the score on wins against lesser quality opponents as they have big wins over Detroit, Indiana, New Orleans, OKC, Charlotte, etc. They beat a better team recently in Toronto, but only by 4 points. San Antonio is just struggling right now, and this spread is just low enough for me to take. The last four wins they had without Ayton were wins by an average of 18 points, I’ll take them to win by margin again today.

PREDICTION: Suns -4.5

Phoenix Suns at San Antonio Spurs Preview from GoldSheet

Phoenix gearing back up with six wins in its last seven (5-2 vs. the spread) with 135-108 destruction of Detroit yesterday. Suns suffered through a bit of a swoon, losing three of four at Christmas time, seem good now and Monty Williams’ crew hasn’t seemed to mind playing unrested, covering four of first six chances this season. A negative for Phoenix is that Deandre Ayton suffered an ankle sprain against the Pistons yesterday, didn’t return and would have to figure to be held out of this match.

The Spurs had a choppy victory against the Clippers on Saturday, building a 16-point lead but then holding LA to 3 of 16 shooting down the stretch, recording the win despite shooting just 41%. On the upside for San Antonio is that they held LA to 38% FGs and regained the services of G Derrick White (out the past 10 days in quarantine), who scored 19 pts. on 7 of 11 shooting, with 4 rebs. & 4 assists, giving HC Gregg Popovich’s team a much-needed infusion. Phoenix has won four straight against the Spurs but have only covered one of the last five in the series, including a 2-0 straight up, 0-2 spread mark in first two this year.
