Minnesota Timberwolves at Memphis Grizzlies Analysis

A game of two teams playing really well tonight as the Timberwolves travel Memphis to take on the scorching hot Grizzlies. Memphis, winners of 10 straight, are a -4 point favorite tonight with a whopping 231 as the total in the game. They will be without Dillon Brooks, and Steven Adams is game time decision, but Minnesota should have their full roster so I expect a close game throughout. The only question left is…can we make money off this game?

Memphis Mowing Down Opponents

What a 10 game stretch it’s been for Memphis as they’ve ripped off 10 straight wins, and they’ve been more than impressive while doing it. They’ve blown out bad teams, they’ve beaten good teams, and they’ve shown that they are one of the deeper teams in the league as Morant, Bane, and Jackson can all be excellent on offense, but other role guys step up each night. They’re doing this without their best defender (Dillon Brooks), and Adams has been out the last few games, so there’s nothing really negative to say about them right now. They are 9-1 against the spread in their 10 game winning streak, and 3-0 their last three at home and 3-0 to the over the last three games. My caution with betting on this team is that the books aren’t going to let Memphis cover 90% of their games like they’ve done the last 10 games, and the NBA can be a fickle beast as you can be the best in the league one week, and then on a four game losing streak the next. The Memphis ride has been awesome, but be careful with riding them too long.

Timberwolves Legit?

The Wolves are finally dealing with a full roster, and they’ve won four out of five, but not the most impressive wins for sure. They beat the Clippers with no Paul George, Houston and OKC twice. It was four games they should have won, but to turn around and lose by three to New Orleans is not a good look as they had their full team in that game. What I’m more interested in is the amount of points in these games recently for Minnesota. They’ve scored 125, 141, and 135 the last three games, so the combination of Russell, Towns and Edwards is producing points, but not a lot of defense. The T’Wolves are now the #1 team in pace of play, and with Memphis being the 6th team in fastest pace of play, expect a lot of shots and a lot of points

Minnesota Timberwolves at Memphis Grizzlies Prediction

I won’t take an under in this contest for sure, so I’ll focus on the Timberwolves and I’ll take their team total OVER 113.5. I think both teams score a ton, so I love taking the team with the lower team total. Minnesota is 4-1 to the over in team totals, and 14-5 on the road going over their team total. Memphis has decent defensive numbers, but Dillon Brooks is a big part of that and he’s out. Take the Timberwolves to get over this total.

Minnesota Timberwolves at Memphis Grizzlies Preview from GoldSheet

At the moment, we might rather pick a fight with Mike Tyson than catch an angry group of Grizzlies. Even with ten straight wins, we suspect little chance Memphis overlooks the T-wolves tonight after their last meeting back on Nov. 20 when Minnesota humiliated the Griz, 138-95, with Ja Morant suffering his most frustrating night of the season (other than Nov. 26 when hurting his knee against the Hawks) when scoring just 11 points on 3 for 9 FG shooting after entering that night scoring at a 26 ppg clip. “They punked us tonight,” Memphis Head Coach Taylor Jenkins admitted afterword. “It’s totally unacceptable.” We suspect Jenkins won’t need to pull out any Knute Rockne-like motivational speeches tonight, especially for Morant, just off of outgunning Steph Curry and the Warriors two nights ago.

It’s hardly a one-man show lately for the Grizzlies, however, with even the bench making significant contributions, such as ex Duke guard Tyus Jones burning Golden State for 17 on Tuesday, after hitting the Clippers for 18 on the road last Saturday. Maybe we can’t dismiss this might simply be a good matchup for the T-wolves, who also pushed Memphis into OT at FedEx Forum back on Nov. 8, and D’Angelo Russell has outplayed Ja across the previous meetings, scoring 29 ppg. But that was all before this recent Grizzlies uptick that has also seen Memphis cover 9 of 10 and take down a variety of high-caliber foes (Suns, Nets, Warriors, Cavs, Clippers, and a pair over the Lakers) in the current steep ascent.
