Mavericks vs Rockets Key Matchups and Handicap

These Southwest Division rivals open their 2026-27 regular seasons from very different starting points. Houston finished last season 52-30, while Dallas struggled to a 26-56 record. Significant offseason changes, however, could make the Mavericks far more competitive than last year’s record suggests.

Dallas Reloads Around Cooper Flagg

The Mavericks enter their second season with Cooper Flagg, who averaged 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists during an impressive rookie campaign. Dallas also welcomes back Kyrie Irving after his lengthy injury absence, giving Flagg an established offensive partner who can create scoring chances for himself and others.

There is also a major change on the sidelines. Dallas hired former Michigan head coach Dusty May, who brings a new coaching philosophy and offensive system to the franchise. The roster was reshaped as well, with Zaccharie Risacher arriving from Atlanta, Santi Aldama joining from Memphis and Morez Johnson Jr. selected in the draft to strengthen a young frontcourt.

Departures of Klay Thompson, Brandon Williams and Marvin Bagley III require additional adjustments, and Anthony Davis is no longer part of the Mavericks’ plans, leaving Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington with important interior responsibilities. Washington averaged 14.2 points and 7.0 rebounds last season, while Naji Marshall contributed 15.2 points.

Houston’s Deep and Physical Roster

The Rockets counter with Kevin Durant, who averaged 26.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists last season. Alperen Sengun is another offensive centerpiece after posting 20.4 points, 8.9 rebounds and 6.2 assists, and Amen Thompson contributed 18.3 points and 7.8 rebounds.

Houston strengthened its backcourt depth by adding veteran guards Marcus Smart and Bogdan Bogdanovic during the offseason. Fred VanVleet also returns after missing last season with a knee injury, bringing additional leadership and playmaking. Steven Adams (calf) and Julian Phillips (illness) are questionable, which could affect the reserve rotation, but the Rockets’ core is intact.

DAL Frontcourt Injuries

Injuries could significantly impact Dallas. Dereck Lively II (foot), Caleb Martin (thumb), Santi Aldama (knee) and Tarik Biberovic (heel) are unavailable, and Jett Howard is questionable with a calf injury. Those frontcourt absences are especially concerning against Houston’s physical interior combination of Sengun, Thompson and Jabari Smith Jr.

Even so, Irving’s return and Flagg’s continued development should help Dallas stay competitive offensively. Houston’s defensive structure and superior depth give the Rockets a clear advantage, but laying nearly double digits against an improved Mavericks lineup carries some risk. The total also looks elevated given Houston’s defensive capabilities, Dallas’ depleted interior rotation and the potential adjustment period under May’s new system.

Mavericks vs Rockets ATS and Total Picks

Mavericks +9.5 is the spread play. Houston has the better roster and deserves to be favored, but nearly double digits is a lot to lay against a Dallas team featuring Cooper Flagg and a returning Kyrie Irving.

The line has moved a full point toward Houston since 10/19, giving Mavericks backers a better number. Even if the Rockets control the game, Irving and Flagg have enough shot creation to keep Dallas within striking distance.

Under 229.5 is the total pick. The number has climbed three points from its opener, with the public heavily backing the Over. Houston’s defensive structure, a thinned-out Dallas frontcourt and the learning curve of a new system under Dusty May all point toward a game played below this inflated total.

  • Total Bet: Under 229.5

Final Score Prediction for Mavericks vs Rockets

Houston’s depth and physical frontcourt give the Rockets control for much of the night, with Kevin Durant and Alperen Sengun leading the way. Dallas does not go away, though, as Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving keep the Mavericks within the number. The Rockets win at home, but the game stays under the total and Dallas covers.

  • Final Score Prediction: Rockets 115, Mavericks 107
  • Spread Pick: Mavericks +9.5
  • Total Pick: Under 229.5
