Echopark Automotive Grand Prix Betting Preview

NASCAR’s goal with creating the new Next Gen cars was to create parody. So far so good. The first five races have been won by five different drivers. If you include the Clash at the Coliseum and the Daytona Duels, you’ve got eight different winners in eight races.

How will the new cars handle the first road course of the season? Let’s preview this weekend’s Echopark Automotive Grand Prix from Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

The Favorites

Remember how we said there was plenty of parody to kick off this season? That was mostly true, but Hendrick Motorsports continues to be the sport’s top team week in and week out. Three of Hendrick’s drivers – Kyle Larson, Alex Bowman and William Byron – have picked up wins already and the team’s fourth driver, Chase Elliott, has opened as the +250 favorite this week.

Elliott won last year’s rain-shortened even at Circuit of the Americas, while his teammate Larson (+300) won three other road course races last season. With those two divers at +250 and +300 respectively, no one else is in single digits at DraftKings.

The Unknown

You’ll continue to hear us tell the same tale for another couple weeks: There are so many unknowns at the start of this season. Not only is this the first road course race in these new Next Gen cars, they’re running at a new track that they’ve only been to once before.

To help combat some of that “newness,” a large number of drivers are participating in other races this weekend. Kyle Busch and Alex Bowman are both running in the truck race on Saturday. Bubba Wallace, Cole Custer and Ross Chastain are running in the Xfinity race. Pay attention to some of their quotes after their respective races on Saturday to see what they have to say about the track. You might be able to pick up a nugget or two before Sunday’s main event.

The Penalty

Brad Keselowski’s 2022 season has gotten off to a rough start, and it got a whole lot worse this week. Keselowski has been penalized 100 points and his crew chief will miss the next four races for illegal parts modifications. If Keselowski were to make the NASCAR playoffs, he’ll have another ten points deducted at that time. Keselowski has never been known as a road course specialist, but he’ll have plenty of eyeballs on him this weekend thanks to that unprecedented penalty.

The Value

Joey Logano (+2500) had three top-5 finishes at road courses last season, including a third-place finish here at COTA where he led 14 of the 54 laps. Dating back to 2020, Logano has six top-10 finishes in his last nine road course races. Should he be tied for 12th on the odds board this week?

Logano’s lack of recent wins might keep you a little chilly on betting him in the outright win market, but his odds to finish top-3/5/10 are appealing.

From Andy Lang: Best average finishes combined at last year’s COTA race, two ROVAL races at Charlotte and two Daytona Road Course races:

  1. Joey Logano 3.4
  2. Chase Elliott 7.5
  3. Denny Hamlin 5.6
  4. Alex Bowman 8.6
  5. Kyle Larson 11.0
