Stephen Thompson is 1-4 in his last five main event spots. Kevin Holland is 0-2 over his UFC career in the main event spot. This is the first time Stephen Thompson has been an underdog inside the octagon since defeating Johnny Hendricks as a +245 underdog in 2016.

Wonderboy

Stephen Thompson has been a UFC mainstay and fan favourite since joining the promotion in 2012 with one of the most unique styles we’ve seen for a striker in the UFC, as he uses a very active Karate stance and uses his range the best of any welterweight we’ve ever seen to touch his opponents with special attacks.

He challenged Tyron Woodley twice for the championship. He fell short in both fights as he earned a draw in the first contest.

Thompson has won his past two fights where his opponents cannot take him down, and it’s hard to imagine Holland shooting for the legs, looking for Wonderboy to manage the distance and avoid the power of Holland while attempting to outpoint Holland over five rounds.

Big Mouth

There’s no more fitting nickname in all of sports than Big Mouth for Kevin Holland, as he talks nonstop during all of his fights, whether it be to his opponent or Daniel Cormier commentating the fight; Holland loves to talk.

Kevin is a very unorthodox fighter as he does his best work in the striking game with his straight punches that sneak up on his opponents with his ridiculously long length.

In this matchup, It’ll be best for Holland to mix in some takedown attempts to get into the clinch, make Thompson carry his weight, and create opportunities for some elbows and heavy blows that prove fatal for the 39-year-old Thompson.

This is an exciting fight, and it’s easy to write off Thompson after his past two fights, but styles make fights, and I’m not picking against Thompson, who dismantled both Luque and Neal in striking battles over the past few years. In what will be a primarily striking fight against Holland, Look for him to use his movement and stay a step ahead of Holland at all times.
