Seattle Mariners vs Texas Rangers Analysis

The Texas Rangers travel northwest to play the Seattle Mariners in the first of a three game set. Texas dropped two of three on the road at Oakland, while the M’s lost three at home to the red-hot Astros.

It’s a battle of right handed pitchers Monday night as Glenn Otto gets the start for the Rangers, and Chris Flexen takes the hill for the Mariners. First pitch is scheduled for 10:10 Eastern / 7:10 Pacific time.

Otto Allowing Batters to Walk Easily

Starter Glenn Otto has been a serviceable pitcher for Texas with occasional flashes of talent. However, he hasn’t put up very good numbers this season. In 13 games and 61 innings, the right-hander has a 5.46 ERA with a 1.46 WHIP and 47 strikeouts.

He’s kept the ball in the yard giving up only eight home runs, but walks have been a problem as he’s allowed 34 free passes. That’s about five walks per nine innings, which isn’t a good ratio for a major league pitcher.

The offense has been fair-to-middlin’, as Texas has the 17th best OPS and 18th best batting average. But they know how to dial up some offense long distance with the 8th most home runs in baseball at 121.

Flexen Looks to Right Ship For Mariners

Chris Flexen has been solid and consistent for Seattle this season with a 3.79 ERA, a 1.39 WHIP with 70 strikeouts in 99.2 innings.

Walks have been a little higher than you’d like to see with three per nine frames. The right hander has avoided the home run and most hard contact, giving up just three long flies in June and July.

In his last 10 starts, Flexen has given up just three earned runs or less. Home and road splits are just about even, and he’s settled into a nice groove this summer after a somewhat rocky month of May.

Seattle Mariners vs Texas Rangers Prediction

After a 14-game winning streak prior to the All-Star break, Seattle ran into the AL juggernaut known as the Houston Astros and lost all three games.

However, they’ve had a lot more success against this Texas team, sweeping four games from the Rangers in Arlington two weekends ago and they’re 8-2 against them this season.

Seattle has the much better starting pitcher with better current form in this game. Now they’re ready to take out some frustrations on Texas after getting swept by Houston at home.

The M’s are still in the mix for a wildcard berth and still have plenty to play for. The Rangers are eight games below .500 and barring a hot second half of the season won’t be in the running for the postseason. That’s why I’ll take the Mariners on the 1st 5 innings run line.

Prediction: Seattle Mariners 1st 5 Innings Run Line (-0.5)
