San Diego Padres vs Colorado Rockies Analysis

The Colorado Rockies travel to Petco Park to play the San Diego Padres in the first of a three game weekend series.

The Rockies just won two of three in San Fran against the Giants, while the Padres took two of three from the Mets at home. Right-handers Chad Kuhl and Joe Musgrove take the mound.

Colorado Rockies Betting Preview

It’s taken a couple of months, but the Rockies may have figured out their starting pitching problems. They got three solid starts from Marquez, Senzatela and Gomber against a division rival where they gave up three earned runs or less.

Until this week, there were a lot of crooked numbers in most of the starters’ stat lines. But one notable exception is tonight’s starter, Chad Kuhl.

A big reason Bud Black wanted to sign Kuhl in free agency is because of his sinker and ability to keep the ball down. That’s what the former Pirates right-hander has been able to do most of the time this year.

In 10 starts and 54.0 innings, he’s compiled a 3.17 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP with 41 strikeouts. Kuhl has given up three earned runs or less in eight of his ten starts, and the other two outings he gave up five earned runs – both times against the Giants. And he’s only given up 20 walks and five home runs.

San Diego Padres Betting Preview

After an 11-0 game one loss to the Mets, the Padres got things together and won the last two games of the series by a combined score of 20-2.

Padres ace Joe Musgrove is having an outstanding season, and looks to be in the running for the NL Cy Young Award.

In 10 starts and 66.0 innings of work, he’s put up a 1.64 ERA, a 0.92 WHIP, struck out 64, and has only given up 20 walks and 5 home runs.

San Diego Padres vs Colorado Rockies Prediction

Kuhl and Musgrove are probably the best starting pitcher for each team, and they do a good job to avoid a lot of mistakes – namely walks and home runs.

Based on the three games they played in Oracle Park, it looks like the Rockies are getting back to how they played on the road in 2021. They may not score a lot of runs, but they don’t give up a lot of runs, either.

Neither team hits right-handed pitching well, as the Rox have a 19th best and the Padres a 25th best OPS against righties. Going against the best starting pitcher for each team will make it more difficult for each lineup.

I still can’t trust the Rockies bullpen with a 2nd worst ERA in baseball. But I can put my trust in “Java Joe” and Chad “Way Kuhl Jr.” (song from the 80s metal band Ratt). I’ll take the 1st 5 innings under runs scored.

Prediction: 1st 5 Innings Under Runs Scored
