Padres vs Reds Analysis

The Cincinnati Reds visit Petco Park to play the San Diego Padres in the first of a three-game series. Left-hander Nick Lodolo goes against fellow southpaw Sean Manaea.

Reds Need to Figure Out Upper Management Issues

The Reds got swept by the Dodgers in their weekend three-game series, scored a combined six runs and start the season with a 2-8 record.

Lodolo has made a quick rise to big leagues, playing at AA Chattanooga last year. Based on news stories from this past week and an uncertain personnel strategy, it looks like the Reds are competing with the Rockies for the most incompetent management in MLB.

Team president (and owner’s son) Phil Castellini threatened to move the team if fans were unhappy with management, not just once – but twice – telling them “where are you gonna go” if they aren’t happy about the direction of the franchise.  Right before the team’s home opener last Tuesday.

Talk about being tone deaf and not giving fans or players much reason for optimism or hope. While I’d rather write about on-the-field play, statistics and trends, this 1,000-pound elephant is impossible to ignore.

When a team’s ownership and management make these kind of statements, it can’t help but affect the mentality of the players. Especially when there isn’t enough good talent on the field to overcome bad owners.

Padres Putting Together Consistent Campaign

Full Season Betting Trend: I hope I’m wrong – because I hate to see any baseball team endure this type of incompetent ownership – but it looks like the Reds could be a team to fade in 2022, and may be looking at a 100-loss season.

They’ll still win their share of games (about one out of three), but it has to be frustrating when you know your bosses don’t have your back, and don’t seem to care what kind of product they put on the field. Just ask Troy Tulowitzki, Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story, who all left Denver for greener baseball pastures.

The Padres split a four-game weekend series with the Braves in Petco Park. and start the year with a 6-5 mark. Yu Darvish had another great start on national TV Sunday night against the Braves. The offense is still struggling, with a combined six runs in the Friday thru Sunday games, but did put up a 12 spot on Thursday. But overall, they’re playing solid baseball to begin the 2022 campaign.

Padres vs Reds Prediction

The money line is a little too expensive to play and I’m not confident enough in the Padres offense to lay the run line.

And I don’t have a good play either way for the total. San Diego’s offense is due for some positive regression and they’re facing a rookie pitcher in his second big league start.

It’s always difficult to predict full games with bullpens, that’s why I’ll take the Padres on the 1st 5 innings run line.

Prediction: Padres 1st 5 innings Run Line
