Padres vs Braves Analysis

The Atlanta Braves visit Petco Park to take on the San Diego Padres in their home opener for the first of a four-game series. Veteran Charlie Morton takes the mound for the Braves against right-hander Joe Musgrove.

Offense Not the Problem

With most other teams struggling to generate runs, that hasn’t been the issue thus far for Atlanta as the Braves are scoring almost five runs per game through out the first week. Matt Olson has stepped in as the new first baseman replacing Freddie Freeman, and has done pretty well. He has a .391 batting average, scored six runs and walked eight times.

The pitching staff (with the exception of Morton) has been a big disappointment, and their team ERA is 5.14 (27th out of 30 major league teams). The veteran right-hander is coming off a very good 2021 season with a 3.34 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, threw 185.2 innings with 216 strikeouts and only issued 58 walks.

Morton’s opening start was also solid, as he went 5.1 innings, gave up just two hits, two earned runs, struck out five and issued one free pass in 78 pitches.

Home Opener

San Diego played their first two series on the road and came away with a 4-3 mark. Joe Musgrove had a quality start in his opener versus Arizona April 9. The right-hander went six innings, scattered five hits, struck out eight and gave up only two earned runs.

The Padres’ offense has been middle-of-the-road in terms of OPS and batting average this first week of the season. There’s a couple of encouraging offensive statistics as the team is tied for second in walks, and ninth in on-base Percentage at .326. Although the lineup is stacked with a good number of mashers, they’re showing good patience at the plate and seeing the ball pretty well to start the year.

Padres vs Braves Prediction

Morton and Musgrove are quality starters and two of the best pitchers in the National League. They’ll be at Petco Park, which is considered the 8th most pitcher-friendly ballpark in the major leagues.

Although the Braves are off to a hot start at the plate, Musgrove should be able to keep them in check the first half of the game, and Morton should do the same against the Padres. I don’t see a lot of runs being scored in this game, and I’ll take the first five innings under four runs, which is available at -120 at most shops.
