Los Angeles Dodgers vs Milwaukee Brewers Analysis

The Milwaukee Brewers visit the Los Angeles Dodgers for the first of a three game series. The Brew Crew had a rough series on the north side of Chicago, losing two of three to the Cubs; while the Dodgers swept three from the Marlins at home.

Southpaw Eric Lauer will take the bump for Milwaukee, and Julio Urias toes the rubber for the Dodgers. First pitch at Chavez Ravine is scheduled for 10:10 PM EDT.

Big Blue is a big favorite at -245, the Brew Crew is a +205 road dog and the over/under is 8.

Lauer Lousy On Road

Milwaukee has had both good hitting and pitching this year to keep them in the NL playoff race. The Brewers are 11th in both team OPS and staff ERA, with a bullpen ERA of 15th. However, inconsistent hitting has been their weakness at times this season.

They really struggle against southpaws with a 26th best team OPS. And that’s not a good trend, facing one of the best left-handers in baseball in Julio Urias.

Eric Lauer has been a solid starter for Milwaukee in 2022. In 22 starts, the southpaw posted a 8-5 record with a 3.59 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP with 123 strikeouts in 125.2 innings.

However, in 12 road starts he’s posted a 4.48 ERA with a 1.29 WHIP in 64.1 frames and 63 strikeouts. Compared to 10 home starts and 61 innings with a 4-2 record, 2.64 ERA and 1.12 WHIP.

Dodgers Most Complete Team in MLB?

Julio Urias has been considered one of the best left-handed pitchers in the National League. And he’s proven that premise again in 2022 with a 2.45 ERA and 0.98 WHIP in 127.2 innings – plus 123 Ks and a 13-6 record.

He faced Milwaukee on the road his last start, going 5.0 shutout innings, giving up four hits and two walks with six strikeouts. The visitors will have an edge, facing him the second game in the last seven days. But given the Brewers lack of success against lefties this year, I don’t think it’ll be a big advantage – especially on the road.

Urias is also in excellent current form. He’s given up a combined four earned runs in his last six starts and 38.0 innings, allowing just four walks, one home run with 37 strikeouts.

Big Blue is #1 in both team OPS and staff ERA, but isn’t quite as strong versus lefties with an 11th best OPS. The Dodgers bullpen also has the 3rd lowest ERA.

Not much else I can say that hasn’t already been said about this NL West powerhouse. They’re one of the top teams in baseball, and will contend for the NL pennant and the World Series.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs Milwaukee Brewers Prediction

It’s tempting to take the “square” wager on the Dodgers on the run line. However, as we finish out the year, LA doesn’t need to win the #1 seed – just one of the top two seeds to get the first-round bye.

They’re currently 15 games ahead of St.Louis – who’s the #3 seed – so they’re almost guaranteed to be no worse than second (barring a real cold streak for LA and/or a hot streak from the Cardinals).

After losing Buehler for the season – and seeing Kershaw get hurt again earlier this year – I think Dave Roberts will focus on keeping his position players and pitchers healthy, instead of getting blowout wins. So while it’s still hard to bet against the Dodgers, the -1.5 run line for LA isn’t the easier (or more profitable) bet that it was earlier this season.

While the Brewers scored a combined 17 runs in three weekend games at Wrigley Field, that was against a weaker pitching staff in a more hitter-friendly ballpark. They step up in class against Big Blue, and in a more pitcher-friendly yard.

This will be Milwaukee’s 11th game in a row without a break, and they fly across the country from the Windy City to SoCal. While I think it should be a fairly close game – since the Brewers are playing to make the postseason – it may take awhile for the visiting lineup to adjust to a better starting pitcher and bullpen in Dodger Stadium.

And they’re in the bottom 5 in baseball in team OPS versus southpaw pitchers. That’s why I’ll take the Brewers 1st 5 innings team total under 1.5 runs scored.

Prediction: Milwaukee Brewers 1st 5 Innings Team Total Under 1.5 Runs Scored
