Los Angeles Angels vs Houston Astros Analysis

The Houston Astros travel to Orange County, California to play the Los Angeles Angels in the first of a three-game set. It’s a battle of righties between Luis Garcia and Noah Syndergaard.

The Halos are glad to be home after a bad 1-8 road trip through Houston, Miami and Baltimore. Houston is on the second leg of a six-game road trip, after they won two of three games in Oakland.

Houston Astros Betting Preview

The Astros are playing really good baseball as we head into the All-Star Break with an AL West leading record of 56-29.

Their pitching staff has the 2nd lowest ERA in baseball at 2,97 with a 3rd-lowest WHIP of 1.10. They have a 4th best OPS of .753 and the 3rd most home runs with 124, and their bullpen has the lowest ERA at 2.63. Not too shabby all the way around.

Luis Garcia has developed into a solid starter for Houston this year. In 15 starts and 82.2 innings, he has a 3.81 ERA, a stellar 1.09 WHIP with 87 strikeouts, 22 walks and 15 long flies – with 10 of them at Minute Maid Park. In 12 of his 15 starts he’s given up three earned runs or less, and five earned runs in each of his remaining three outings.

Los Angeles Angels Betting Preview

Stop me if you’ve heard this before. A talented club in the American League with two of the best players in baseball starts the season hot, then cools off into mediocrity as we get to the All-Star Break.

That describes the Los Angeles Angels in 2022 and the last few years. Their current record is 38-49, eight games out of the second wild card spot behind Tampa Bay.

It’s not impossible for this talented club to get hot and compete for a playoff spot, but they will have to play much better and more consistent baseball from now through early October.

Starter Noah Syndergaard isn’t the dominating strikeout pitcher he was a few years ago, but he’s still been a solid performer for the Angels.

In 13 starts and 70.1 innings he’s put up a 3.84 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP with 55 strikeouts. In 10 of those starts, he’s only given up three earned runs or less. Control has been very good as he’s given up only 16 walks and eight home runs.

Los Angeles Angels vs Houston Astros Prediction

The Angels are a struggling ball club right now, and I have a hard time backing them given their current form. Especially the first game after an extended nine game road trip, which is almost always a spot to fade the home team.

Houston has the 4th best OPS against righties this year, while the Angels are 16th in this category. I know that the Halos are due for positive regression, but I don’t want to try and catch this “falling knife” of a team that’s lost eight of their last nine. That’s why I’ll take Houston on the moneyline.

Prediction: Houston Moneyline
