Colorado Rockies vs Milwaukee Brewers Analysis

The Colorado Rockies host the Milwaukee Brewers in the first of a three game series. The Brewers dropped three of four to the Diamondbacks in Arizona, while Colorado lost two of three to the Reds and went 3-7 on their road trip through New York (Mets), Atlanta and Cincinnati.

Milwaukee is still in the playoff hunt with a 70-63 record, 2.5 games behind the Phillies for the final wild card spot. The Rockies are 57-78 and last in the NL West, 36.0 games behind the Dodgers.

House of Cards

Adrian Houser hasn’t had a great year in Milwaukee with a 4-9 record, 5.02 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in 16 starts and 80.2 innings. He’s allowed 35 walks and eight hone runs for the season, which comes to less than one bomb and 3.92 walks per nine innings.

The best way to describe the Brew Crew over this baseball season is: Dangerous but inconsistent. Their pitching staff ERA and team OPS are in the top half of MLB clubs, but just 22nd in batting average.

However, they’ve relied on the long ball for a good chunk of their offense as they’re third in team home runs. Whether they can get enough bombs to make up for the lack of consistent hitting will probably be the key factor if they make the postseason.

Earning a Spot

Just like most years, the Rockies are out of the playoff race in September. So they’re looking at some of their young minor league talent to give them a test in the “show.”

Although he was called up last month from Albuquerque, Ryan Feltner is one of the Rox younger arms they’re testing out. He’s split time between the AAA club and Colorado in 2022.

With the Isotopes he’s had solid results that include a 5-1 record, a 3.83 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 11 starts and 51.2 innings. Feltner has also struck out 60, walked 35 and allowed 5 home runs – which are pretty good numbers and ratios.

His major league numbers haven’t been as good with a 5.78 ERA, a 1.42 WHIP and 2-6 record in 13 starts and 67.0 innings. The big problem has been the long ball, as the right-hander has given up 13 bombs – too many for a major league pitcher to allow.

Colorado Rockies vs Milwaukee Brewers Prediction

Neither team or starter is in great current form, and the Rox are playing their first game in 11 at Coors Field after an extended road trip – usually a spot to fade the home team. Feltner has given up at least one home run in each of his last six starts, and the Brewers have the third-most home runs as a team.

It’s tough to trust either side in this contest, but with two starters with an ERA over 5.00, a Rox bullpen that’s among the worst in baseball, and a Brewers team who can mash – I’ll take the full game over total runs scored.

Prediction: Over 11.5 Total Runs Scored
